Well, that's my point - I don't want to. It's preposterous, and it's Hasbro putting their poor business decisions on you and I as consumers. They're losing money due to lost sales (not profit loss on a per-sales basis) and looking to you and I to make up for it.
I make a good living - in a typical hour I make enough to buy several Classified figures, let's put it that way. So it astonishes me still that Hasbro, deciding they want to further exploit us consumers to pay for their bad business decisions on an aggregate (again, not per-product) level - it doesn't astonish me that Hasbro values shareholders over consumer. It does astonish me that Hiss Tank users would take this opportunity of Hasbro saying "fiscal pain for all consumers, not for us" to say "hahaha suck it fellow consumers." Blind, unrewarded corporate adoration is something I'll go to the grave simply never understanding. It is a simple truth that Hasbro should be more grateful to me for my consumption of their products than the other way around, and yet we have users here mocking others because we're not all corporate bootlickers, standing in line to kiss the ass of the Hasbro C-Suite and thank them for $32.99 GI Joe Classified figures.

But anyway, I don't think the OP's point was celebration for a company fleecing it's customers. Rather, I think it's more a bit of poking fun at the constant price-bitching Joe collectors have always done. We have a reputation for cheapness/"I'll wait for clearance". I've always felt that even if the price was still around the two bucks is was back in the day, it still wouldn't be low enough for some.

Corporate "fans" creep me out, TBH. Like the folks who fetishize Tesla or say they're a "Chevy Guy" or get into arguments that Apple is superior. I just think it's both stupid and sad. Even worse is paying for the privilege of being a walking billboard for a corporation. I mean, WTF? You want me to wear your lame half-eaten fruit logo and advertise for you, pay me.

I've always felt that even if the price was still around the two bucks is was back in the day, it still wouldn't be low enough for some. My Transformers collecting is far more joyous than my Joe collecting, mainly because the resculpts/re-engineers of Transformers are huge jumps from the G1 toys. Hasbro is constantly outdoing themselves in terms of figure design, fit and finish, and general play value overall. Every single one I've purchased is an improved trip back to my childhood without any compromise. The upcoming Motormaster is $90, but he's an engineering marvel with features never seen before in any Transformers figure. He is even more of a playset than the Earthrise Optimus Prime is, and larger as well. His limbs to form Menasor are a much more reasonable $24.99 each. I continue to feel like, for this amount of money they are *currently* asking, that what they are offering in the Transformers line is a good value for now. Their price increases are accompanied by significant jumps in product quality and engineering. I do not feel like this with GI Joe Classified or Marvel Legends. The value in ML especially has decreased significantly since I started collecting in 2018. I am glad to have 98% of what I want, though, and am down to collecting only 1-2 figures a year. I would never suggest anyone start collecting Marvel figures at this point. The pricing of the new Toad figure announced this week is just criminal, really. Classified started out as a fun line at a somewhat reasonable price, but really ended up being the line that saw the fastest price hikes in the shortest amount of time. It also saw some significant direction change which made me question whether I wanted to collect this alongside what I already owned which was similar but smaller and the answer really is no. As a Black Series collector, I actually feel disrespected and my intelligence insulted. I get the impression that Disney and Hasbro see Star Wars fans as mindless sheep who will buy anything and like it without complaint despite the abysmal failure of the Rancor haslab. Getting any kind of extra accessory in Black Series now means a $10 price hike and turns it into a "deluxe" figure for $32.99 (probably soon to be $34.99) My Black Series consists of most of the Empire Strikes Back 40th figures bought on damaged cards at half off, A couple Mando (one with Grogu) and Cara Dune. Finally, we get to the O-ring line. What a doozy this is. It has the least-explainable price hike at $40 per 2-pack for a junky cardboard box, some flimsier-than-necessary cards, and some extra accessories wrapped in tissue paper. I would be very surprised to see this line live past 2023. It is by far the most inflated value for money, and I believe the pricing is purely based on second-hand-market scarcity. |
