My approach (and it has worked every time) whether the item was in the back or elsewhere in the store has been “Hi! (With a big smile). I’m looking for an item. Can you tell me if you have it in stock.”
Gives DCPI and met with a couple of responses: “No, we don’t but it shows they are supposed to arrive on…” “No, we don’t. They were supposed to be on today’s truck and they weren’t but so and so store shows them in stock.” “Yes, we do. It’s in the back. Let me see if I can find it.” “Yes, we do on aisle such and such.” This has happened a few times when items were in a weird out of the norm end cap” No matter what the response, they always get a “You’re awesome” and a “thank you so much!” Never have I ever mentioned Popfindr or BrickSeek etc when they have said no. The last thing imma do is be one one of those guys that is like “yeah, but the online such and such says.” It’s embarrassing for everyone involved. On the flip side, I also scored a date with a stock guy/employee whatever you want to call them when looking for an item. He asked if I wanted to get some coffee since he was going on break in about ten minutes. I politely declined telling him I don’t drink coffee etc and he said ok, well can I give you my number or have yours and I can take you somewhere we’d both enjoy.” Difficult time turning down a request like that.

I assumed this was common sense. I guess not.

Different strokes for different folks, and all of that rot.
GI Joe was about as diverse as it got back in the day, why should it's fandom be any different?
