I actually have high hopes for this movie- but any time a cast member, especially while describing his own character, says “or something like that”, it definitely worries me.

I used to have hope.. but no longer have hope for this movie at all.. when you have 350+ characters to pick from and you need to create new ones.. it is a head scratcher. And no, I don't need a marketing analogy or a speech about how they have to modernize the story - G.I. Joe is what it is and for that reason is the greatest selling toy of all time.. we complain, yes.. but all in all, us fans are still waiting to see a G.I. Joe movie on the big screen.. we dreamed of it while watching the cartoon, reading the comics and playing with the toys in the 80's and don't talk to me about Baroness's epic grappling hook and don't tell me as an old fan I cannot still dream for what I always wanted as a fan.. I am not arguing about what you want to see.. I am arguing about what I wanted first.. a really long time ago.. to see my Real American Heroes on the big screen.. with a huge Baroness voice yelling Cccooobbrrraa! Where hiss tanks and havocs look like hiss tanks and havocs.. just like the millenium falcon always looked like the millenium falcon.. sorry for the rant.. just still have a simple wish.. Friedman once said it would cost 400 million to bring the real G.I. Joe to the big screen.. 15 years later I would think technology has exceeded itself and would no longer cost that much.. how hard is it really? Look at the movies we get.. Yo Joe to all!

I can see the advantage of not using an established named villain since it means if the story requires Snake Eyes to kill off the main villain at the end of the story fans aren't upset that they threw away their favorite villain. If they are actually attempting at building a franchise it might also be better story telling if Storm Shadow has that big moment of betrayal instead of enemies from the start.
Plus it's not like the Real American Hero comics and cartoons were never about expanding the fictional universe. Every time Hasbro wanted to sell a new toy characters, vehicles and even factions were added to the GI Joe universe. By not filling this movie with a load of established characters it means less recasting if it fails and they have to start over yet again. I hope the film is successful but you just never know what the public's taste in films will be like whenever this movie eventually hits theaters. Not wanting to get into the spoilers but depending on designs it might mean some cool toy designs without having to complain about how they messed up a classic look. New provides some freedom for costume designers which fingers crossed will result in some cool toys. |

This is sounding less and less like a "GIJoe" movie - and more and more like a low budget Martial Arts B-movie with a few GIJoe names sprinkled in. Losing any optimism I might have had.

Seriously, the story is already written. If Marvel can adapt the comics so successfully, why can't GIJoe? It makes zero sense not to. Start with Operation Lady Doomsday. Introduce Cobra / Small team of Joes. Scarlet gets kidnapped when they rescue Burkhardt. Snake Eyes goes to the Silent Castle to retrieve her. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes are shown to have the same tattoo. Soft Master explains the history to Snake Eyes in New York. Final Battle would be issue 27 battling on top of subway cars. Ends in cliffhanger of 'is Storm Shadow dead or alive' / 'who is Storm Shadow'? Easy Peasy. They are overthinking things.

All this complaining and a trailer hasn't even been shown. The movie could be fine and is obviously meant for people who either don't know what G.I.Joe is or just didn't like the last 2 movies.

The doe-eyed optimists are funny. Don't stop believing, guys! New G.I.Joe movie announced: "Yes! New G.I.Joe movie!" Henry Golding announced as Snake-Eyes: "It could be great!" First trailer arrives: "Uhh.. it could be great!" Oct 21, 2021: "It could be great, honest!" Oct 22, 2021 (or whenever): "Oh..." And of course there's always that one guy: Oct 22, 2021: "It was great, honest! It said G.I.Joe in the title!"

Really looking forward to this movie, please please PLEASE don’t frick this franchise up this time Paramount/Hasbro!
Exactly, having an unknown main villain is a good idea instead of killing off Scrap Iron or Destro or someone... plus its before GI Joe right? Still, got no idea why Baroness or Scarlett are in it though, at all? |
