I worked at a company that went through bankruptcy, all it did was restructure the company, change hands, but it is still around and ended up making millions more than before... so meh, wait and see.

I doubt this news truly shocks anyone. But it does hurt my inner child and it always sucks when people lose there jobs.

They barely stock anything I want. They either never had it, or it sold out when they opened the door. When they DO have something, the price is ridiculous. Hardly any employees, too. I think I go once a month just to look around, but the store is close. I know in some areas, the nearest store is miles/hours away. We ALL know the story of the Joes: Many people bought them on-line because of BAD distribution, few people actually went into stores. Their website stinks, too.

Terrible news but Toys R Us sucks. They never stock their shelves EVER....I think they bought too many Disney Infinity things and now they pay the price. For real though, whether its distribution, poor management, poor inventory control, all of the above....they just flat out suck and when they get something they stock it the first time and that's it.

Feel sorry? For Toys R Us? That monster of a company? Do I need to remind you guys how poorly they operate? --------------------------------- If I tell you guys that Rewards programs that give such generous coupons are a problem and your response is to increase prices on all products by 5-30%, what did you guys think would happen to your sales? If I then tell you a business where almost all sales are done on 30% discount days indicates your prices are overpriced and you LAUGH at me, and then you go bankrupt, who was right again? Oh right me. If you are selling toys and you raise the price by $5-10 because only you carry it and then suddenly a lot of people don't come back, what can I say. YOU DESERVED IT. If I THEN tell you that you will Hemorrhage A TON OF MONEY on product from a big toy company, maybe next time, you should listen hmmm? To those of us that used to go into these places regularly it's no surprise. In fact, I'm surprised they are still IN business. Quote:
Yeah, I've got my memories, childhood and otherwise, of going into Toys R Us and buying cool, great toys. But it's been many moons since those days, and they've brought this on themselves. I'm indifferent on the outcome.

TRU's been pretty good to me. They've always had toys my son (you know, an actual kid) wanted and I never had much of a problem finding what I wanted there either. Sorry to say this, but what ails TRU has very little to do with what some of you all have pontificated on. Competition from Walmart/Target and Amazon, and outsized shrink are probably the biggest problems for a store like TRU.
Contrary to popular opinion, TRU's sometimes higher prices aren't the real issue, so much as it's just more convenient to buy toys online or get them in a store you already have to be in for other items anyway. And the shrink at a store like TRU is ridiculous. Their customer oriented, 90-day, few questions asked return policy encourages abuse. Meanwhile, the in-store theft is just atrocious. Everything from ticky-tack sneak-thievery to people actively piling a cart full and running out the door. All of which is made easier by the fact they can't afford to run the store with a full staff or pay the people who work there a decent enough wage. The margins just aren't there, so they pay relative peanuts and skeleton crew it. I've been in plenty of TRU backrooms and they all had piles of opened packages missing the actual item and mounds of returned items too damaged/tampered with to re-sell. And I got news for you, all of that theft comes from adult toy collectors and parents. It isn't all crack-heads, and it sure ain't little kids with sticky fingers. TRU is basically easy pickings and we all take advantage of it. Shit, just a few weeks ago, I scared a fat geek off from shoving a Marvel Legends figure into his messenger bag. I turned into the aisle just in time to see it going down. Thing that pissed me off most, judging by his clothing and hygiene (not to mention the Audi suv-thing he scampered into), was that he wasn't poor. He just didn't want to pay for something he could easily steal. Anyway, these are tough times for retailers and it bodes poorly for us all. People have been buying less anyway, either going without or stealing what they can't afford. The more places go under, the less competition there will be. And the less competition, the higher the prices. The higher the prices, the more theft. It's a vicious circle that even Walmart is feeling. |

It's not an experience to go to TRU anymore. There are no surprises waiting there, thanks in-part to the internet keeping me informed, but also their unwillingness to be different from all the other retailers. They don't merchandise the store anymore. Not that there are any toy line with product that needs the big displays above the shelves. Remember when the big playsets & slot car tracks would get assembled & attached to a piece of plywood? They don't even have any interesting Lego displays.

Either way, I'll wait until I read the obituary before I start writing the eulogy. They could very well pull through.
