The support for this is just...baffling and sad. JOE is dead . Supporting mediocrity doesn't increase the chances for a quality product down the line . It just enables more mediocrity.Just pull the plug.

I have my doubts about this working out for the better. However, the crazy ass hatred aside for Bay's TF flicks aside. The franchise has been a billion dollar franchise for Paramount, and also done good for Hasbro as well. While the over PC, not trying to offend anyone, G.I. JOE:The Rise of Cobra went over with a lot of us like a lead balloon. RETALIATION seemed to get a lot more fan love as being closer to the sources material. Including JOE'S godfather, Larry Hama. And idea of an interconnected cinematic universe would seem like Hasbro's trying to get on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's bandwagon. Like Warner Brothers and DC seem to be doing, alongside Universal with their monsters. There has been a history of Easter Eggs since the Eighties during the heyday of Marvel/Sunbow Era. And most recently in Transformers:PRIME with Optimus' new vehicle mode being a prototype developed by the Army's M.A.S.K. division. And Agent Fowler leading the Sky Striker Squadron against Megatron's Darkmount. So it doesn't seem like too much a stretch. And Akiva Goldsman still gets blamed for BATMN & ROBIN, the man was a small cog in a rather large, convoluted machine. Who according to the writer of the flick's novelization, Peter David, had to do one or two rewrites of the film's script on a daily basis for every producer, director, studio head, and merchandiser involved in the production. Goldsman had also done a lot of work on one of my favorite sci-fi shows ,FRINGE. As producer. writer ,and director on the program. And a lot of these guys in the writer's room have been part of some fan-favorite shows as well. So I have some confidence in this.

I think its very difficult to do a movie in the GI Joe universe. I didn't hate ROC and I didn't hate Retaliation but neither struck me as being able to establish a brand worth investing a huge amount into.
Then again - you never know how things can work out - I just feel like trying to jam everything into one becomes problematic no matter how well it works out on the front end. Case in point - I'm nowhere near convinced the Marvel Universe can escape its currently planned phase schedule without having some serious fall off and at that point I don't know if they can reboot or if that would end up being like spiderman. |

Well I support the idea. I have always thought Hasbro should have interduced a shared universe concept a long time ago.
What they need to do is get the TV, Comics, and movie groups together Now the Comics and Tv teams would work more closely together and the Movie teams could take their cues from them. For example and some easy retcons. G.I. Joe Can be a team like ARAH years but with divisions the main team is still a military outfit but has different divisions like Adventure team is a search and rescue team, Earth Corps is the enviromental and science division, and M.A.S.K. division is their domestic team (like a super swat team). The chain of command would not have to change much either Gen. (ret) colton heads up the Adventure team, Gen Hawk is the ARAH leader, Gen Flagg is the overall head and is the Pentagon liason and Matt Traker is the head of M.A.S.K. and DR. Armstrong heads up Earth Corp. Many of the Joes could pull double duty as well (since they are a team over all) for example Shockwave could be sent on missions with M.A.S.K or Alpine could be sent on a mission with the Adventure team. Cobra can still be the same organisation it has always been no real changes needed. Red shadows could be interduced as another group that can be utilized so that Cobra is not the only enemy (kinda shows why G.I. Joe is needed. Venom Maybe Miles Mayhem left Cobra to form his own group after deciding that Cobra was not good enough or something along those lines. Maybe they are an off shoot funded by Cobra or maybe even Destro. Cobra-La This would be the biggest retcon.... Maybe Cobra bumps into them and they "Team Up" as they need their help in freeing their "Leader Metlar from his prison (Yes link Cobra-la to the Inhumanoids). maybe the two could work together. General Blitz Yes from Sgt. Savage i think this would be a great addition he and his army of cyborgs from the WW2 era. to fight as well could even be a basis for the movie since it would add a story to how the original G.I. Joe team was formed in WW2. Sgt. Savage could be like the Joes version of Captain America and treated the same could add some fun into the mix. he could operate on his own or be a full time member of the team. The Inhumanoids They could still exist in the center of the Earth and only some of their story would have to change. Transformers This is the glue that helps all of the non Earth dwelling properties together. They could be how the Visionaries and Rom could enter the picture (details in their section) Since the Transformers war rages on both Cybertron and Earth they could at times team up with the various Earth groups when needed to or hunted by them. Maybe M.A.S.K. got their Transformation tech from their vehicles from a fallen transformer they recovered. Maybe Cobra or Destro could have gotten some of their tech the same way.....what if Swindle sold arms to Destro who was able to reverse engineer them? Visionaries They utilize magic but what is magic ...its energy a Decepticon scouting party cold have stumbled upon them or maybe Autobot Refugees landed on their world and thats how they got the science part of their world (if you notice its a combo of magic and science). Rom Rom is a space knight well there could be more and maybe they are the protectors of space and Earth is in Rom area (think GL Corp) or maybe the Space knights are hunting Decepticons so they cannot destroy or harm other planets. Air Raiders Same as the Visionaries their world could be visited and brought into it all by a chance encounter with Transformers Sky Commanders They could be either retconned into part of the G.I. Joe adventure team or be a non affiliated organisation. Iron Greniders Would not have to change all that much would still be Destro's private army SKAR Would have to be changed maybe they are affiliated with Cobra or the Red Shadows? There are many posibilities here to be explored that would only serve to help all the properties in the long run. |

GI Joe movie reboot? Sure!
Grunt, Stalker, and Flint meet the Micronauts and Visionaries? No thank you! That sounds like they're taking everything that was awful about Rise of Cobra and cranking it up to 11. The writers just need to go back and read the first 48 issues of the Marvel run - there's plenty in there to build from. |
