Great movie!
A couple of cheesy moments, but overall a great film. Can't wait to have this on DVD for the bonus content.

Either its brilliant or just terrible acting, but how can one go back and forth from an Austrailian accent to a rural Deep South accent. Other than that, FF kicked ass. Especially his intro!!!

Finally didn't have to walk out of the theater pissed, and I'm glad at that. I don't really see what was so hard to follow for some critics. Anyways, I didn't like the abrupt intro to Blind Master, thought that was poor editing/pacing, and I didn't like Cobra Commander's voice. He was under utilized but presence was great in every scene. Thought I was gonna hate Firefly but I didn't. Not how I envision him, but he had some good scenes. As an action movie I'd give it a B-.
I like Channing Tatum in this one. Didn't expect that to happen. |

It had its cheese moments but overall it felt like the GI Joe comic/Good Sunbow episodes VS that other joe movie that I did not care for.

so I've seen it twice now and my only real Gripes were that it appears that Mouse was killed off really quick and he was one of the new joes I actually liked along with LJ, Flint was so-so and I really wanted to see more of Grunt as the guy who played him is another really good indy wrestler and he looked right for the part

I saw the film in 3D a few days ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Despite its flaws, I definitely consider it a huge step up from ROC. Yes, the pacing was a little wonky and it felt a bit rushed overall, but it just felt so much more like a "Joe" movie to me than ROC did...and I didn't hate ROC. The vehicles were somewhat modified, but still easily recognizable as Joe/Cobra vehicles. The battles were fought with bullets and missiles, not lasers. If anything, this film felt like the Larry Hama Marvel Comics version of the Joes, while the first film felt more like the Sunbow cartoon version.
My main gripe was Flint; that guy was way too hesitant and unsure to be Flint. Lady Jaye's undressing in front of him, and he turns his head and sneaks a few peeks? Please...Flint would've been all over that. I'm not saying the actor was bad or anything...he just wasn't "Flint" to me at all. My girlfriend has no previous familiarity with Flint, though, so she thought he was great; I'm sure the shirtless scene aided her favorable opinion. (She saw and liked the first film, so she genuinely wanted to see the sequel, but she admitted that the presence of The Rock and Channing Tatum provided "extra incentive" to see it.) I didn't care for Tatum's portrayal of Duke in ROC, so I was ambivalent to his appearance in this film...but he died early on, so whatever. The Rock had the requisite physical characteristics and charisma to pull off Roadblock, and I have no complaints about Ray Park as Snake Eyes or Byung-hun Lee as Storm Shadow (although I'm still not thrilled with Storm Shadow's uniform). I was satisfied with the film's portrayal of Cobra Commander, but I wish he'd had a larger role. Hated to see Firefly killed, but there are plenty of other Cobras to take his place in future movies, at least enough to cover this round of continuity. I don't necessarily foresee a "G.I. Joe 7" coming in 2023; I suspect that if the franchise continues to put out films, it will be rebooted before we get that far. Hell, it only took ten years/three films to happen to Spider-Man... As a near-40-year-old man who still has a huge fondness for the stories/characters/franchises from my childhood years, this film was much better than I expected. Aside from the aforementioned dislike of this movie's version of Flint, I was happy with the characters for the most part. I've learned to temper my expectations for this sort of film (especially a "team" film, where only so much time can be devoted to each character); when I saw the first "X-Men" movie back in 2000, I was pissed that the guy who played Wolverine was (a rather thin) 6'2" tall. Blasphemy! Wolverine's supposed to be a stocky little runt, but this guy's taller than Cyclops! But, over time, I began to appreciate Hugh Jackman's take on the character, and now I can't see anyone else playing the role. For years, there was talk of Glenn Danzig playing the role of Wolverine in the "X-Men" films...while Danzig certainly might have matched the "look" of the character, who's to say that Danzig can act for shit? I understand that the film version of Wolverine can't necessarily be "THE" Wolverine that I remember from the comics, or all of the movies in which he appears would be rated "R" at the very least. Plus, I knew that there were versions of that character that appeared in cartoons with which I wasn't familiar; concessions have to be made in these situations. These films have to appeal to a wide audience. So, while I might be disappointed with a given character's portrayal, I know that it's not always going to be EXACTLY like I remember or expect. Watching the films with that perspective has helped me overlook certain perceived flaws. I'm not saying that we should just automatically accept whatever the films throw at us, but I'm careful not to be TOO judgmental. No interpretation is ever going to satisfy EVERY fan. While I understand the desire some people have to see a more "realistic" G.I. Joe film (general public more so than die-hard fans), I personally don't want that. As much as I liked Christopher Nolan's "realistic" take on Batman...those movies are just so damn BLEAK. I'd take "The Avengers" over any of the Nolan "Batman" films simply because "The Avengers" was FUN. And to me, that's what a movie about superheroes is supposed to be...FUN. Yes, the Joes aren't "superheroes," but they're fictional characters from a toyline/cartoon/comic book franchise from my childhood; in my opinion, that element of "fun" should always be a part of their stories. I'm not saying the filmmakers should gloss over the ramifications of "war," but they didn't...Duke, Firefly, Zartan (maybe) and numerous Joes died in the course of one film (and London was freakin' destroyed, even if nobody seemed to care). I felt that "Retaliation" struck a nice balance between "fun" and "serious," even if some (or several) of the plot elements made no sense. Sorry for such a long-winded first post, but it's nice to have a place to express my thoughts to people who are more apt to understand my affection for this franchise and these characters. Also, I've had a few shots of cheap Canadian whiskey, and that always makes me talkative (typeative?). Yo, Joe! |
