I was able to grab a copy of GIJOE #1 at the Comic Book Shop Launch Party. Here is my honest opinion on the first issue, the good the bad and the ugly.
This review will contain many spoilers so if you do not wish to know the full content of issue #1 do not read on. We all have seen the 5 page preview located here: G.I JOE #1 Relaunch 5 Page Preview - GI Joe News From that 5 page preview you can gather what the core G.I.Joe team will look like. General Colton has taken over high command from General Hawk. I have already read a few people complaining about that but why should it matter? Colton seems to be a cool character to have in place of Hawk, and in my Joe universe it fits. Generals get moved around all the time from command authority and I'm glad to see Colton back. Duke, Roadblock, Doc, Cover Girl, Shipwreck, Tunnel Rat and Quick Kick. So the core team is made up of these 6 G.I.Joe's with Duke in the lead. Hashtag is the teams official connection to the media. She is a college student who owns a popular blog and is enrolled in R.O.T.C. at her college. She is also an ARMY brat, unarmed civilian attached to the most elite counter terrorist unit the USA has. It makes no sense at all why they would allow a teenager to enter a war zone to directly blog about it to the world. Absolutely Ridiculous! Apparently Cover Girl agree's and lets Duke know how she feels about that issue. The good news is on that front, she has a very small part in the first issue and quickly fades away into the background doing very little harm to the rest of the story. I would expect once the core fans start reading the comics she will be killed off or relieved of duty with extreme prejudice. I had high hopes that IDW had created a new useful G.I.Joe but that is not the case. DOC is the daughter of ARAH DOC. This was not directly connected in words but seriously implied. ARAH DOC was shown with the new Female DOC giving his daughter hot-zone medic, combat advice. Unlike what they did with Colton (that I liked) this was an awful way to connect the new with the old. So ARAH DOC is to old now to go on missions with the G.I.Joe team but Shipwreck, Cover Girl, Duke, Tunnel Rat, Roadblock etc.... are still in their prime and fighting on. Rookie Mistake. On the bright side of that coin the new DOC looks like she will be an interesting addition to the G.I.Joe team and one that will be part of the core so we will hopefully get to see development of her character. Shipwreck has a note worthy addition or modern update to his gear load-out. I don't think anybody here will be upset to see that the Polly we all know has changed into a useful weapon. Polly is now a small flying drone that helps the team see the battlefield. Awesome idea, I love it. This is a perfect example of what the new book is doing right. I would also love to see this made into a figure. So far the Duke persona is being scripted well and I can't complain. I like the idea and attitude that Cover Girl has. It's also implied that Duke and Cover Girl are sleeping together and have a personal relationship. There is not a lot to say about Roadblock except you can tell the artist likes this character. He is drawn really well, with the right amount of emotion, and his combat action looks good. The Skystorm V.T.O.L. that is used in the first issue looks like it will be the main transportation for the Joe Team. That would be great if it did not look like a direct K.O. of the Avengers Jet. the only difference is it changes into a chopper. I hope that gets the boot and they start using something more original. It looks nice and is drawn well but every time I look at it I get distracted and think Avengers. W.O.R.M.S. and Maggot = Doing it right. The main battle that takes place in the first issue is between the G.I.Joe unit with the Skystorm V.T.O.L. vs. a Unit of W.O.R.M.S. with a Maggot. More of this is what I want to see. Even tho the colors were a bit muted this is what G.I.Joe vs. Cobra is about....Combat! The Baroness full page art on the last page = Doing it right. Overall I will give the first issue a C+. No matter what they would have tried somebody was going to complain about it. I think once we get past the first few issues and they get reader feedback it has the potential to be a good run. But please do your homework IDW team, the fans will be watching your every move. Art gets a B. That's my honest opinion and in no way is my view better then the next fan, Give the new book a try and see for yourself.

1st Scarlett and Mainframe. And now Duke and Covergirl???
I love GI Joe and I have bought all of their comics but IDW's not cutting it any more (with the main title). I'm still not going to pick this up. I'll wait for Special Missions and Cobra Files.

Once again IDW has proven they cannot write a decent joe book. I kiek Shipwreck and his drone...but he should be with CG not duke. Plus the artwork hasn't improved that much and is still dreadfully sloppy and the stories dont seem like they ahve gotten much better. Easy to stay with the marvel continutiy..though i am still pissed about billy (yah it was issues back but i liked billy a lot and always hoped he and jinx would end up together.)

I cannot do anything but shake my head and laugh that the #1 issue that seems to be turning Joe fans off is which fictional character is sleeping with which other fictional character in a comic book.
I dont' really care either way, I haven't bought a Joe comic in years besides classic reprint TPBs, and don't intend to start, it's just extremely giggle-worthy to me that the soap-opera melodrama aspects of comics are sometimes so important to the mostly-male readership. And it's not really anything new...we've been the same way over a multitude of comics over the years, and as a whole tend to be utterly resistant to any change in status quo...which is why things rarely change permanently in comics. We get too whiny when they do so they eventually undo it. Last edited by Jmacq1; 02-16-2013 at 04:39 PM.. |

This isn't high school musical. There is no need to stick to the status quo people!

I'm fine with change if it's done well and for a reason. Polly makes perfect sense to me, it adds greaty realism and some needed tech to the Joe team.
the Doc issue? Since i've already dropped IDW i have no idea if the old Doc had already been used. I'm unsure why IDW decided to re-arrange the times when Joes joined up so much. And Duke and CoverGirl? sounds like a pointless thing to me.

Does it matter if people date other people? Seems like that should be fairly minor. Other than Clark Kent and Lois and Peter Parker and MJ is there really a comic book couple that needs to stay together to indicate good stories? Ironically both of those super couples are not currently together! Clark is dating Wonder Woman and MJ is dating Doc Ock sorta kinda.
I know Shipwreck and CG have been together, but when did that become a must for the Joe universe? I can't speak on what went on with Duke and CG in this, but I really think the Scarlett Mainframe thing was done pretty well by Dixon. |

Doc has not been established as a main Joe in this continuity. I can't recall if he has even appeared so it is completely feasible for him to no longer be in active duty.
