Did I mention the scene I'd have for the Baroness?
Would you go see a Joe movie like this? I know I would. Now that I'm think more about it, it would be a great series on Prime or such. Start with this kind of thing and as the season progresses, gradually move to the military component. Let's go deep (that's what she said) into the world that created the need for GI Joe. Maybe Lady Jaye was doing recon and espionage on a file about a man who had been seen last at a hospital looking for a boy named Billy... Maybe she found a dossier of some import/export company with manufacturing capability called MARS... |

I have a confession to make: I need to be resold on Snake Eyes. When I was a kid and everything about ninjas was magical and cool, Snake Eyes couldn't help but be one of the coolest Joes. I feel like the general awe and mystique of ninjas today is so worn out and campy we need to have a major overhaul or a return to the core of what a ninja really was and did. That may mean reducing screentime, but making it clear that he is like the Ace up the Joe team's collective sleeve. He's been overused and abused imo and I'd like to see more effort to make him less of a cartoony action hero.

The biggest thing I would change about the live action movies, if I could only change one thing, would be to give our iconic characters their classic costumes. Some already came close (the ninjas, Baroness) but show a picture of Channing Tatum to a kid in, say, 1990, and they might believe he's a Joe, but few would guess Duke. The cartoon Flint wore his beret even with civies! Modernize them but make them recognizable.
I forget where I heard it, but Christopher Reeve said something along the lines of he let the suit do most of the acting for "Superman". All he had to do was fill it out and live up to it. Granted, none of the Joes are as iconic as Kal-El, but the big ones do have brand recognition. |

After finishing Ashoka, I’m convinced forcing original cartoon IP into live action is a gimmick that’s lost its novelty.
For G.I. Joe, I’d say do an animated anthology series like Star Wars Visions. Different Animation studios doing their take on the characters. Stories of small teams of Joes or Cobras on missions that may or may not be connected. |

Well, one thing I think they did do right with Snake Eyes was the tone. It was more serious. There were elements of humor but not so silly that I couldn't take the rest of the movie seriously. Though I admit there were other factors that made me take it less seriously.
The previous live action movies were just too goofy for my taste. That works well with children's cartoons but not so much with a live action GIJOE movie. That is one of many reasons I couldn't stand the Transformers movies. I still remember the first one where the mom eats pot brownies and flies around like an airplane. Just stupid as hell. The trailers always made the movies look good then I'd watch the movies and want to cut out about 30 minutes from each one. So I would say any new live action movies should focus on setting a more serious tone. Keep the stakes high. Cut out all the eyeroll inducing nonsense. Hire actors that are good but not yet superstars. Then maybe they can be in the sequels and they won't have to be killed off and reboot the entire team just to make a sequel. That goes for JOE and Cobra. It will be interesting to see if ANY of the actors from Snake Eyes ever reprise their roles in the GIJOE cinematic universe. I think Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow was one of the highlights of that movie. I would love to see him stay in that role. Lastly, avoid cliffhanger endings. Just make a complete movie that can stand on its own in case it flops so badly that a sequel is out of the question.

Don't race or gender swap any of the characters. G.I. Joe is one of the few 80s properties (if not the only one) that had a good amount of diversity right off the bat and it's only improved in that regard with characters introduced in the past 20 years. We don't need Asian Snake Eyes or black Ripcord. Either use existing characters to fit those diversity quotas or create entirely new ones. That's also acceptable. Bring Wolf Spider into the next film. Have him be played by Kumail Nanjiani... dude got jacked to be in the Eternals. Dawn Moreno is also an option and Jenna Ortega would be awesome in that role. But, whatever you do, leave the nonsense with Snake Eyes's memories being uploaded into her brain in the comics.
