Actually if you read his file card literally. He enlisted, and never left school until he became a pilot. He entered basic, then airborne, Ranger, and Green Beret, THEN WOCS Flight School. And YES, there was a time in the Army when you did have to be Ranger qualified to be eligible to go Special Forces. It wasnt always a career track you could go straight into. Before someone tries to compare how the military works now, with how it used to work.
But it we augment the file cards with the old Marvel Comic continuity, and the 2 used to really work pretty well together back in the day, we see that Duke recruited Flint to come over the Joes. Duke, being a Green Beret, would have worked with Flint in the Groups. Flint's specialty as a Helicopter Pilot is always secondary and in a lot of his file cards it's not even mentioned. It seems that what is primary for Flint is his role as a Special Forces Operator. He's a Green Beret who can fly, not a pilot who is a qualified Green Beret.

Oh, I'm well aware of how it used to work. And you're right, back in the day a soldier had to be an NCO (enlisted) or a 1LT(P) (Officer) to apply for Special Forces selection. But Ranger school has never been "required" to go into Special Forces.

If they were limited to purses and just slapping, I'd have to go with Duke.

Flint has a bigger member and is not a pretty boy. At least, that's what I'm assuming. Flint would totally kick his ass.

When I was in back in the early 90's I went through AIT with a SF SSG. One of us asked him about going Green Beret and he told us that you needed to pass Jump School AND Ranger training to qualify. I believe it was done back then as a means of "sharing the training cost". I believe this was used in between the era with the old SF career track after Vietnam that continued into the 80's, and the modern career track available now. I know that now there is a seperate second step to SF training that is expedited compared to Ranger training. I'm not sure how long that system was used, but for a time I know it was how they ran the program.
I've heard of SF guys reffering to Ranger school as a "soft requirement" meaning that it was "understood" as a requirement for most guys, because most of the guys trying out for SF were either Infantry or Cav Scouts. But it wasn't an official "hard" requirement because other MOS's are officially allowed to try out for SF.

Well, I don't know which AIT you went through, but I'm guessing Infantry. And no doubt, if an Infantryman applies for SF, he better have a Ranger Tab. However, sometimes guys from other MOS's apply for SF who haven't had an opportunity to go to Ranger School... this is especially true with Officers. I've known a couple of Officers who started off in Chemical Corps and never went through Ranger School.

Our MOS had high level clearance and dealt with kryptography, which is one of the reasons I'd assume it was something he needed. Orders for Spec Ops units got passed through us from echelon level, so their comm specialist would probably want a working knowledge of that chain. I'm not sure if Officers had different reqs then enlisted, I doubt it though. Or if it was an issue at that time period of both budget, and an effort to expedite soldiers through. However, that's what we were told, and I've no reason to doubt that knowledge as I heard it first hand. He had no reason to lie.
