I think a Joe series of any type would be something released on Paramount Plus. I would be up for it because the showrunners are fans and competent. Maybe Hasbro can give Skybound the reigns to television. The Walking Dead and Invincible were very successful TV series. I trust Kirkman more than Lorenzo with TV.

The reason we have such crappy writing is actually because the good ones left because the pay is indeed that bad. Then Hollywood studios went up another level of failure and decreased the amount of time the writers have to do rewrites . . . .

Not to completely derail the thread but part of the problem with why current shows suck is not that good writers have gotten worse, but that studios have been finding ways to find less and less experienced writers, and then employ less of them, than would previously be considered normal for a show.
And then they've not allowed writers to be on set to see how the writing is playing out or to help make changes if scenes aren't working. I would argue that current entertainment is so bad not because writers aren't trying, but because we've lost the old systems that helped new, fresh writers learn from seasoned, experienced writers and shows have a balance of both kinds of voices. Studios need to stop treating scripts as an afterthought.

I somehow still manage to find shows that entertain me. Granted, I don't watch as much as most so maybe I just have a better backlog to choose from and it is skewing my perspective.
I hear this same argument from people who say there isn't any good music being made anymore. There is a shitload of good music being made, you just have to search for it. If you are looking to the mainstream for quality, you will most likely be searching for a long time. The same goes for comics, video games, books, etc.

I agree with you. There are shows made by showrunners with talent and vision that are entertaining. I would put The Good Place, Community on this list. I haven't watched Breaking Bad but it is probably there too. Rick and Morty isn't my kind of show but nobody can say the writers don't know what they are doing.
A showrunner who understands writing and story and character can still make a good show. But more and more TV and movies are crap because the writing isn't as important to the studios as to whether the concept plays or, more often now, the IP has a big enough existing audience. The script is an afterthought.

This is true. What I said about the mainstream isn't me trying to sound pretentious. It is just the realization that the mainstream is trying to appeal to the least common denominator, that which can make the most money. Creativity and quality takes a backseat to advertising dollars. Yes, the result of that at times can be entertaining but it can also just feel like "seen this, done that". Folks who have a vision and want to put out something of quality often don't have the big money to promote it. It still exists, but it often takes effort to search it out.

Genres don't always translate over, either. Marvel took three Rick and Morty writers, including the woman who wrote the fantastic Pickle Rick episode, and put them in charge of Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, and She-Hulk. Dr. Strange was ok, but should have been a lot better. Ant-Man bombed at the box office and She-Hulk is considered one of the worst Marvel shows.
I don't understand why the MCU doesn't just hire ACTUAL comic writers to write the stories for the movies and shows?

I don't understand why the MCU doesn't just hire ACTUAL comic writers to write the stories for the movies and shows? I think the problem is you have to find comic writers who can write good movies and shows. So far Robert Kirkman is the only comic writer I can think of who can do that. Frank Miller who wrote great comics like 300, Dark Knight Returns, and Daredevil: Born Again went on to write Robocop 2 & 3 and those movies were awful. Miller also wrote and directed that awful Spirit movie from 2008. Granted Miller's comics have also gotten terrible as of late Holy Terro anyone? Then there is Geoff Johns who wrote good comics like Blackest Night, Flashpoint, and Batman Earth One, but he also wrote the screenplay for terrible movies like Wonder Woman 1984 & Josstice League. So you have to find comic writers who can also write movies because they are different mediums. |
