My brother rents a room from me and he trashed it completely. We had a few drinks and I laid it on the line. I told him either get all that shit out of his bedroom or find another place to live. The room literally stinks. It's disgusting. I told him a grown man should know how to dispose of trash properly.
Then he came back with, "How are you a grown man when you buy toys?". Is this how a lot of people think? That adults can't be toy collectors? It just threw me off. I mean the dude's 40 years old and plays video games all day so he shouldn't have an issue with what I buy being juvenile. |

Two, not being married, having kids, and owning his own place. Three, living in what sounds like squalor and not keeping a cleaned up place with everything put away and the bed made. Four, playing video games. Getting shit for playing video games has been around for a long time and I have heard that more than buying toys. I've gotten weird crap years ago about not being married and kids. I've had friends say shit like we can only get together if my wife likes your wife and our kids are the EXACT same age. I had a friend get crap years ago for renting a place and not owning a home. But I never got any crap about buying toys. If you have your shit together and have disposable income you can buy whatever the fuck you want. All kinds of decent and successful people collect all kinds of things. You collect what you like. I happen to like certain action figure lines but I also collect books and movies too. Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld collect cars. Gene Simmons collects toys. Nicolas Cage collects comic-books. Some people collect art. Others collect suits of armor, baseball cards, comic books, etc. If you have the ability to collect things either because you like them or as an investment more power to ya. But trashing a room and playing video games does not sound like the person has their shit together and really has no room to talk. |

I don't mean to be offensive, I mean he is your brother and all, but F him. He should not throw stones because it sounds like he is really living in a very fragile glass house because I could see many people out there calling his ass out for multiple things. I do not agree with all of these things I am going to list but I have heard others say crap like this before:

The bed is literally covered in beer cans and Domino's pizza boxes. It smells like mildew so I keep the door closed at all times. I consider this a health risk. We've had it out multiple times but he refuses to clean it up. I mean I paid off my mortgage with his rent money, but it's not really worth this. I was yelling at him so loudly yesterday that my neighbor knocked on the door and asked if things were ok. She's nosey as hell but good hearted I think. I told my mom about it and she said I should give him applications for the apartments down the road. Let's see how well he does trashing up someone else's place. |

It sounds like you backed him into a corner and he realizes how irresponsible and juvenile he's being so he had to go into defense mode and grab at something to throw back at you. It's a typical immature response. It mean you had the higher ground and he felt threatened. You should've did a sinister laugh and walked away.

Is there anything wrong with your brother, besides being an ass? To leave garbage to the point of mildew could indicate something is very wrong. In any case, I agree, he's grasping at straws and being juvenile.

Dude has an excuse for everything. And when you call him out on his shit he tries every trick in the book to be the victim. I feel like his parent rather than a brother. I shouldn't have to feel guilty about wanting my house clean or collecting whatever I want. We've been together for 40 years as of November. He moved in with me when he was 18. It feels like it's time for him to go find his own way in life. |

If he is living like that then there is probably a need for counseling or it will get worse. He may have lashed out at you because he knows it is wrong and is unhappy about how he is living, but it is generally easier to externalize those feelings than face them head on.

I have a BiL who buys guitars- that he barely plays, no less. I had another buddy into motor cycles, and plenty of friends who play video games a lot.
I don't see the difference in what makes those hobbies socially "adult" and mine not. To me, I'm an art collector (and as a customizer, I guess I could argue I'm an artist, as well). So, yeah, fuck him. Sounds like he has his own shit to figure out.

That sounds like a very difficult situation. But yeah, he was just trying to deflect and was grasping for straws to defend his poor habits.
The idea of someone being content living in their own filth and playing video games all day paints an unpleasant picture.
