Now before anyone wonders, I'm not saying they should be should be shoved full-front in every piece of Joe media. I just wish to make a civil discussion about a topic I don't hear too many people here bring up or mention.
How such a character could work in any potential future show, movie or comic, and how it can be done well. |

Generally, by making it incidental to the character. The way the new Star Trek did Sulu, for instance.

Well like it or lump it, the only way for any franchise to survive these days is to get on board with it, so may as well get over any qualms we may have and ask ourselves just how much we really want the Joe name and brand to survive.

Don't ask, don't tell?
Joking. At any rate, my first thought was to be careful about overtly sexualizing the brand (in any direction, actually). Plus that bigots buy action figures/see movies/watch tv, too. However, according to one study (although admittedly from GLAAD, so likely a little bit biased) ... Quote:

BTW, when I first saw several of the Dreadnoks, I had no frame of reference or knowledge of G.I. Joe lore at the time. So before looking up the filecards/other media, I just kinda figured they were militant homosexuals.

Like the character or not, Dawn Moreno was done right. SE didn’t suddenly gender swap, buuut—through a reasonable storyline—more or less did. And I dug it.

Interestingly enough, George Takei agrees with me. ;)

I agree gender/race swapping is entirely unnecessary. The so-called "minorities"* already on the team simply need to be focused on more heavily. * Who represent a vast majority of the country, actually.

You know, I'm all for inclusion and accurate representation of modern reality in pop cultural things (for example, I like how Disney is doing it: portraying women as real people and not just caricatures, same-sex couples dropping kids off at school, characters who are gay but that's not all they are, etc...), but I also feel like anything sexual or dealing with sexuality should be muted when it comes to stuff targeted at kids. We're making them grow-up too fast as it is. To me, GI Joe is kid's stuff, so I don't even think in terms of sexuality here. I don't give a shit whether Scarlett is dating Duke or Snake Eyes, or if Zarana is a lesbian/bi, or whatever. It just isn't applicable. Besides, sexuality is an ancillary trait and should never define a person.

I don’t believe it can be done well, or done at all, to include LGBT characters in G.I. Joe, or any of Hasbro’s other properties which are marketed to children ages 4 and up.
How has Hasbro’s other brands’ sales numbers fared with our without the inclusion of LGBT characters when we examine brands such as Mr. Potato Head, Baby Alive, Littlest Pet Shop, and furReal? My guess would be that the toys would sell to more households if they avoided subjects which may be contrary to the beliefs of that particular caregiver. Maybe not all of the countries which Hasbro markets to have laws receptive to LGBT principles or homosexual practices. I believe that Hasbro would be better served to allow each customer to make their own independent decisions regarding teaching about homosexuality to a child, and that would probably be more in line with Hasbro’s statement from their corporate website: “We look at our marketing content through a caregiver’s and child’s eyes to ensure it is appropriate and depicts an accurate engagement and play experience with Hasbro toys and games.” https://csr.hasbro.com/en-us/responsible-marketing

Ehhh....didn't you just post this exact same thing on the Transformers forum, word for word?
Are you some kind of LGBT bot doing market research? https://www.tfw2005.com/boards/threa...rmers.1201732/ |
