Not so much GI Joe, but I wonder if they will exploring the Sam Wilson/Bucky relationship in future Marvel ventures.

So theres only really 3 established couples in the Joes right? Snake (Or Duke) and Scarlet, Flint and Jaye and Ripcord and Candy.
Over on the Cobra side we know CC had a son before he started Cobra so he is (At least) bi. Destro and Baroness are a couple. Roadpig has a thing for Zarana. Zartan has a daughter in Devils Due. Anyone else who knows? if it comes up in a story it comes up. Otherwise it doesn't matter.

While not necessarily a fan of the Zarana/Mainframe pairing*, I'm still a bit surprised how quickly the writers just totally abandoned that subplot. Only being briefly re-visited (and in a creepy way) when Zarana hands a pre-pubescent Mainframe the secret formula (for the anti-aging serum) during "Grey Hairs and Growing Pains". In all future interactions, no reference at all is made to their past romance.

If you're hinting at anything more than that, then I would point out that while greater representation for LGBTQ folks is a good thing, IMO, it should not come at the point of reinforcing the toxic idea that two people (particularly two male people) cannot have a close, emotionally intimate relationship without there being a romantic or sexual element to it. Basically the idea that if your friendship goes any deeper than hanging out and drinking beers/watching "the game"/rolling some dice playing D&D/whatever casual recreational activity, then clearly it MUST be homosexual love is not a healthy one. The Bucky/Steve relationship was a pretty great example of a strong, loving, but platonic bond between two guys. For "popcorn entertainment" it was presented well, and now Sam and Bucky seem to be developing a similar rapport. That's cool, and should be encouraged as much as better representation for traditionally-neglected groups in entertainment. |

They've done a pretty good job of establishing their friendship.

My headcanon always had Flint as Lady Jaye’s beard. It was the 80s, pre Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and she had to be careful, right? Nobody wants to go through all the trouble of Ranger School just to be booted out of the army for being a lesbian.

Right (incidental), although I would prefer not doing this with already established characters. For that matter, don’t gender/race swap characters, either. Make new ones or get creative if you want FURTHER diversity in Joe. It’s not the end of the world, just unnecessary, IMO.
Like the character or not, Dawn Moreno was done right. SE didn’t suddenly gender swap, buuut—through a reasonable storyline—more or less did. And I dug it.
