This goes out to all the customizers, what brand is the best/easiest to work with? Tamiya, Testors, Citadel?

I pretty much stick with Testors. I'll only branch out if I need a certain color they don't have (I hate mixing paint), although Testors mixes just fine, it's something I don't enjoy.

I've only used Testors Model Masters acrylic, but I've been pretty pleased with it. Like Jinx723 said, make sure it's ACRYLIC. I mistakenly bought and used enamel on a custom a few years ago, and I think it's still sticky. I also read a tip somewhere to add just a tiny bit of water to thin the paint out just a little more. You end up doing more coats, but it keeps the paint from getting too thick on parts of the figure. Don't be TOO liberal about adding the water, though.

Are you guys referring to oil based enamels? They work fine if you seal them appropriately.

I also never use enamels, but with Testors Model Master acrylic, I don’t use any sealing coat and don’t seem to have issues with paint wearing.

Here’s some advice I gave on another thread:
You probably know this already but make sure you’re using Acrylics and not Enamels. Enamels never cure completely on figures and remain tacky. Acrylics are water based, so simple cleaning and thinning with water is a bonus. To answer your question I’ve used both Tamiya and Citadel. I found Citadel easier to work with on customs. To me Tamiya seem a little ‘runnier’ than Citadel. I found i needed more coats of Tamiya than Citadel. For a beginner i found Citadel far more forgiving in terms of covering areas easier and quicker. Regardless you will get a decent finish with both types. As for durability I’d finish with a spray matt coat to seal everything and they wouldn’t do much apart from sit on a shelf so others might weigh in on chipping. A basic Citadel set would be a good start, for base colours such as black, white etc. I found the Citadel figure painting guides very helpful. Tips and tricks for painting eyes etc. Lately for metallic areas I’ve been using Sharpie metallic permanent markers. Great for small silver and gold areas and no messy metallic pigment to remove from your brushes. Hope that helps and good luck. |

I'm just getting started with adding paint apps to my Classified collection. I recently bought a nice chromium marker set and have gotten to work painting the black (and in Beach Head's case, green) blades of edge weapons to make them look more realistic. My question is, when it comes to painting the guns, which type/colour of marker pen would you suggest?
