his face looks like a white guy. but i think i've read somewhere people thought he was vietnamese. guess its part of the mystery. maybe he is half and half. french guy comes there looking for a new life, starts a farm, finds him a local girl....boom baby firefly.
or it could just be artist error as no one really cared to think that hard about who he was and just drew him as a white dude. i would think he is 50/50 because if you look at all the true asians that are drawn like jinx, budo, QK. their eyes look asain. but again if they really didnt give FF much thought the default is a white dude. he was never written with an accent either but even GH lost his a few issues in. |

I always assumed he was French, as there's a good chance a plantation owner in Southeast Asia during WW2 would be French. He definitely doesn't look Vietnamese.

One thing I always found confusing about Firefly's origin is his true ethnicity. It was explained in the Marvel run that Firefly was the son of a plantation owner and anti-Japanese guerrilla fighter in French Indochina. His father saves the life of a Japanese soldier who happens to be the son of the Grand Master of the Koga Ninja Clan. When Firefly's father is killed, he is taken in and adopted by the Koga Ninja Clan.
Looking at the few pictures available of Firefly without a mask, his face doesn't quite reflect what he really is. What I want to know is Firefly supposed to be French, Vietnamese, or perhaps a combination of both? Besides Vietnam, French Indochina also included what is now Cambodia and Laos, so could he possibly be Cambodian or maybe Laotian? Jerwa had planned a third mini-series which would be about Firefly. In it, we would learn that there were two Fireflys the whole time, and that one was apprenticed (secretly) to the other but that they shared a single identity. This would take into account his curious racial history, and also the weirdness surrounding his "sometimes a ninja, sometimes not a ninja" history of appearances. Anyway, it never happened and would be "disavowed" by now if it had been produced, but I would have liked to read that. |
