'85 was also the first year since '82 that new troop builder figures were introduced aside for Cobra Trooper and Officer...

This list is flawed. Although I would probably vote 85. Zartan, Firefly, Storm Shadow, Hovercraft came out in 84. Missing? Vipers come in 86 with the Night Raven, BATS, Beachhead, Terror Dome again missing. I was not a fan of 87 as much but 88, 89, 90 were almost the same, where are they? 1989 is one of the best years for vehicles.

1985 100% without a doubt! That was the year everything really exploded! Joe was extremely cool in 84 with the intro of characters like Storm Shadow, Zartan, Firefly, scrap Iron, Roadblock, Duke etc. but in 85 things really went all out and the landscape of the property really changed with a ton of vehicles, new characters, and the introduction of sub-group cobra specialists. The t.v. show was introduced this year as well and was in everyone's face everyday on t.v. as opposed to the 2 mini-series before it. That saturation made joe the powerhouse property that it was.

I picked 1982. I gotta go with where it all started. When I first saw the new sized Joes summer of 1982 my jaw hit the floor. I had no idea they were coming out (in fact I was in the toy store that day to buy Star Wars figures) and it was a total surprise. I had just missed the 12" run by a few years and my world revolved around plastic army men at the time. 3 3/4" GI JOE's were what seemed like a god send to a 9 year old like me.

Where is 1984? Isn't that the year Zartan came out?

I support the 1986 campaign. Great vehicles and characters came out that year. How can the Viper's debut not be counted?!

85-86 were the years that defined for me what G.I. Joe means, with all the cool characters and concepts that were introduced. However I vote for 2007 because of the great redesign and articulation of the figures and vehicles, and the fact that I can afford them this time around. My collection now is basically what my ultimate dream collection was back when I was a kid. For me, that's what this is about, buying the stuff I had and lost but mostly buying the stuff I couldn't have.

2009 Baby!!! Year of the Joes!! Tons on the shelves, people buying them left and right and NO disappointments!! Hasbro should be very proud of how 2009 has went so far for the Joes! They are truly making a killing!!

There is a lot of love for the 86 stuff in this thread and for good reason. 86 gave us some really classic characters (Beach-head, Low-light, Vipers, Bats, Mindbender etc.) and some great vehicles and playsets (Tomahawk, Terrordrome, Night Raven, Stun).
In my opinion though 1986 is when things started to shift from realistic modern army designs to "Wackyland" with the likes of Serpentor (cloning), Android troopers (we are still about 20 years away from this), dayglo colors (I'm looking at you Sci-Fi), and indestructible super hero wrestler (Sgt. Slaughter). The futuristic seeding was done in 86 (just look at the change in the cardback explosion to digital pixels) and would reverberate for the next 8 years with (BF2000, even crazier vehicle designs, Eco warriors, Battle Corps, Mega Marines, Star Brigade) causing the sharp decline of the line in the early 90's. |
