I know it's a weird question seeing as most of us are in our late 30s to early 40s and we're still pretty into it, but I just turned 40 yesterday and it got me thinking as I was talking with my parents.
I feel old, at least my knees do. I cannot crouch down like I used to or lift as much. But I feel young in spirit. I feel like a big, goofy kid. I'm serious when I need to be, I pay my bills, my mortgage, car payments, insurance, 401K. I have no credit card debt... I'm doing what most adults should be doing... yet I have a room full of toys and I love being a silly kid that collects little plastic men. My mom and dad had 4 kids and even grandkids by the time they were 40. I cannot imagine my dad with toys, my older brother doesn't collect anything. Hell, even my young nephew (who was a HUGE TMNT fan) doesn't have toys now that he's in his 20s. I hear about other 40 year old people and the only toys they buy are for their kids. (40 Year Old Virgin aside) I cannot have kids, so I only buy toys for other family members on their birthdays and Christmas... but right now GI Joe is pretty much my only hobby... I wake up and look at a bunch of figures on my night stand and last night I spent the entire night sorting figure stands and weapons into little baggies. It got me wondering... am I trying to escape reality? Am I trying to keep a little child inside me alive because of modern day stresses? Am I going to be 50-60-70 years old and still wanting to have this stuff around? Am I going to age out? Will Hasbro just stop, forcing me to stop? Will the Club keep going and for how long before they too just go, "meh... it was a good run, but I'm going home." What am I doing? Ha!

You are just questioning it more because you don't have kids (and I guess unmarried). The married with children guys in their 30s and 40s don't seem to question it that much.
If you had kids I'm sure you would have way way way less Joes as the kids would hopefully take priority financially..... I don't have kids either, but if I did..my collection would be much smaller and more focused.....I'd certainly have a home office full of nerd stuff still--just maybe not bins and bins and bins full.

Sounds like that is the problem. Does she give you grief for the toys? Joking, but really I got to the point in life I just enjoy what I enjoy, and the ONLY person I answer too is me. Who cares, would it make more sense if you collected classic cars, beer steins, shot glasses, or whatever doodad someone else values.
Also, who doesn't want to escape reality. That is the nature of EVERYTHING sold to us outside basic living function. |

She honestly doesn't give me much grief at all, she's pretty good about it, but in return I don't go crazy, crazy and just buy buy buy... I'm just comparing my life to the others around me... not many others have a Joe room (except many here)
I'm just picturing what our "old folk's homes" are going to look like... we'll be using walkers, jamming to Metallica and Snoop Dog, watching cartoons and the young people giving us our pills and changing our Depends will be like... they've really lost their minds!

I came into this late in my 30's, my wife finds it weird but does not care as it keeps me outta here hair...it's a hobby, hobbies in of themselves are ageless, what's the real difference between Model Railroad guys and us? And a lot of those guys are like 113 years old...

Well, I doubt you age out per se. You could get burned out I guess....happens to many people. I don't think it is much different than having a garage full of one use tools or a pet classic car project. Different strokes.
I got kinda burned out on modern era Joes....just lost interest mostly...still love the little o-ring guys though....the new marauder stuff has given me a new interest in action figures as a whole--that's a good thing i guess.

I was an avid rap and heavy metal guy into my mid-20's........I now listen to classical, jazz and big band music...hahah. My ears cannot tolerate it any more......
i guess many of us evolve as we age or we keep living the same way we did only with creekier knees and backs... I imagine the Joe stuff will be the same way..the collection will adapt or go away or just keep growing...

My girlfriend expects that I will eventually age out of GI Joes, but I don't think I will.
But maybe she's right. Who knows? I often wonder if my toy buying is a legitimate hobby or if I too am living in a fantasy world. Is engrossing myself in activities I enjoyed as a kid a manifestation of a latent fear of death? I really don't know. |
