I didn't think Cobra-La was a good idea for GI JOE, either. I just understand why they tried different things, and sometimes bad ideas got green lit, other times they don't. They wanted the Dreadnoks to be like Ewoks or something (Fatal Fluffies?) before Hama convinced them otherwise. There were concepts for GI JOE super heroes in the early 90's, IIRC. And of course, the Replicator aliens. |

I agree cobra la was not necessary back in the day i saw gi joe the movie in the theater when it came out with my best friend and when we saw cobra la we were both like WTF and dealt with it and continued on with the movie . i liked the premise of it but the execution was meh ,growing up with a father that took me to every kind of sci fi movie that was out old and new at he time made me appreciate it but thats about it i loved pythona even nemesis enforcer but to use those characters and plot in a movie and then never speak of them again was kinda stupid in my opinion thats the 80's for you so read in to it what you will ...
FROM WIKI G.I. Joe: The Movie was intended as a theatrical release to be closely followed by The Transformers: The Movie. However, the G.I. Joe film encountered unexpected production delays which allowed the Transformers feature to be released first. Due to the poor box office performances of the Transformers film and My Little Pony: The Movie, G.I. Joe: The Movie was instead released direct-to-video as well as aired on television in syndication

Not necessary, but neither were they beyond the scope of what had already been done before in GI Joe - at least within the confines of the cartoons. A lot of the fans that grew up with this product recall the introduction of Cobra-La in the 1987 movie as the moment the shark had been fully jumped. I disagree. People want to remember ARAH as a military action-oriented genre, but it was more sci-fi and fantasy than anything else - unless you're talking about the comic series, which is entirely different and never included Cobra-La in the original Marvel run. I grew up with the toys and comics and wasn't exposed to the cartoon series aside from the original 5-part mini-series, two episodes that my cousin had on VHS and the movie that my dad copied for me. It was cool to see GI Joe on tv, but the movie didn't translate well for me personally because it was so vastly different from the Hama storyline. I also never had the Cobra-La 3-pack figures and wasn't too interested in them. As a kid, I didn't care. I felt the same way about Serpentor, who was equally ridiculous.
But as an adult, I feel like it could be redone more interestingly and make them more acceptable to some of the purists in the fan base. It would move GI Joe into a more paranormal-like realm, but with some of the hi-tech weaponry that the unit is outfitted with, it's just a different direction to go from with the same sci-fi start point. I know there isn't a lot of support for Cobra-La, but I for one like the idea. It only took me about 25 years to come around...

I've always loved the military aspect of G.I. Joe, it's one of the major factors that drew me in. But, I also love the fantasy and sci fi aspect. G.I. Joe had Ninjas, Snake Armor, mind control chips, Battle android troopers, clones, genetically created monsters, time travel, alternate dimensions, they even had a demon in one episode.
When they introduced Cobra La, I won't lie, I was taken a bit off guard like, "Wait, what?", and then I was like "Oh my god this is AWESOME." I was mesmerized. Think about this for a moment; Secret society of ancient reptilian humanoid warriors, that lived in a secret city in the Himalayas, and used biotechnology. That's some badass shit, I'm sorry. Having said that, there was one thing that always bothered me about Cobra La. It was that they decided to reveal that Cobra Commander is a member of Cobra La. I did not like that at all, I had been wondering for years who was under that mask, and was so eager to know, and then when they revealed that, I was like "Nope, not happening." In my personal "Joeverse", CC is a human. I'm ok with CC working with or even for Cobra La, go ahead and spore mutate him into a worm, I'm cool with that, but he is a human. By making CC a member of their race, it permanently ties Cobra La into the story, the writers are committed and cannot abort, they are locked in. But by simply making them a new faction coming into the story, you can have fun, blow up some giant mushrooms, kill a giant spider, and then move on. When next weeks episode comes up, you can go back to business as usual. You can just say "Man that was crazy, hey remember that time we fought those reptilians?, yeah let's move on." And, now, all those sad kids that were sad about change can be happy again. |

I always thought the movie was amazing as a kid and still do to this day. It's so well-done that's it hard to quarrel with any of it. In fact, the bad editing on the death of Duke only highlights how great the movie was executed originally. The original animation was so clear in its storytelling that you can tell Duke is dying even though the voiceover dub tries to tell you otherwise. The cartoon had already had the Joes encountering ghosts, aliens, ancient Egyptian gods, a parallel universe, a time machine that took them to ancient Greece, and a giant-sized Polly the parrot, so Cobra-La was actually far more realistic and believable than much of what they'd done before. And the idea of a modern metal/electronic-technology based force going up against an ancient organic army makes for a fascinating dichotomy both visually and thematically.
Nemesis Enforcer was an absolute badass, a perfect new "nemesis" for the Sarge. It was impressive that Sunbow pulled off giving him a powerful personality without giving him any dialogue, something they had never seemed comfortable doing with Snake-Eyes. Non from the Superman movies is a bit of a predecessor for him, but Nemesis had more of the Boba Fett-style flair about him. Pythona was the best female villain the series had ever had. She was sexy, gorgeous, powerful, acrobatic, elegant, cruel, unforgiving and hateful. Far better than Baroness and Zarana with their annoying accents and cowardly, self-serving personalities. Pythona's entrance and reveal in the introduction are epic and her final battle with Jinx is one of the most dramatic fights in the movie. Golobulus is Cobra's most intelligent and visionary leader but also their most heartless and sadistic. Burgess Meredith's performance was a standout, conveying his disdain for his opponents with sublime subtlety. It would've been awesome to see Golobulus make a return appearance with his missing eye as a signature injury inspiring him to seek vengeance. I liked when the Cobra-La Royal Guards sang the "lalalalala" battle cry. It was freaky and creepy, making it clear you were encountering a very different culture that could make unpredictable and dangerous moves. It didn't work when Serpentor repeated it though. The voice actor spoiled that moment. The ideas in the movie are being ripped off by Hollywood to this day. Amazing Spider-Man stole the villainous plot to mutate the human race into animalistic creatures by dispersing airborne mutagens. Hellboy II ripped off the idea of an ancient race based on organic technology who had once ruled the earth but had gone into hiding for centuries and was now trying to mount a comeback. Guillermo Del Toro seems to have a hard-on for Hasbro/Sunbow as he also completely ripped off the premise of Inhumanoids for Pacific Rim. The only odd thing about the movie was how much the continuity of the comic diverted from the cartoon. They were never in synch but the movie origin of Cobra Commander drove an irreconcilable wedge between them. But I guess that wouldn't even be unusual today since movie versions of comic book characters also often change aspects of the story. But I don't think this origin made Cobra Commander a less interesting or less functional character. He was already such an oddball personality that clashed with everyone else, that he really didn't have to be written any differently after this. The idea that Cobra Commander is now actually physically part snake, as DIC seemed to have him end up, is also pretty cool and just makes Cobra more weird and fun.
