I've always liked Serpentor OVER the Commander, and I never understood the hatred for the Emperor. So it led into a full-blown debate last night with some friends. The talking points:
(Based off the cartoon) Serpentor is supreme in many ways (not opinion, either). He was created in a lab, and thus had no childhood. No repressed memories holding him back or driving him forward. He was a war machine that thought. When he fought, he refused to retreat and CC ALWAYS retreated. Those loyal to Serpentor were actually loyal whereas everyone in CC's cabal looked to overthrow him or mocked him for his leadership (Destro, the Twins, Bludd and especially Mindbender). Even with the Cobra-La storyline, it proved that Serpentor was a prophesied harbinger of the new era. CC was a failure to the cause. Serpentor did not hesitate to kill. Serpentor's biggest loss came at the hands of Sgt. Slaughter when they fought hand-to-hand (note that Slaughter was basically unstoppable in this era). CC's got beat up by a tree and almost lost his mask. And it summed up nicely with their quotes: Serpentor: "THIS! I command!" CC: "Cobra! Retreat! Retreat!" And the generals: "Commander! You fool!" So, I ask you, the Tank, why stand behind a failure and hate a true Emperor?

I seriously got tired of hearing "this I command" all the time. (I like him much better in the comics) Plus while he might be a better leader dna wise he never had the personality of commander. Commander's rants with Destro and others cracked me up.

Its not so much i hated the character i hated how idiotic he seemed in the toon. I mean always saying THIS I COMMAND after almost everything and always shouting? He reminds me of the loudtalker from Seinfeld. I'd hate to hear him in the the batroom if he was constipated..."YOU WILL EVACUATE MY BOWELS TURD.....THIS I COMMAND!"

I understand the annoyance of his constant yelling. Though at the time, I'd take that over Slaughter's gruff and CC's whining.

You're making most of your observations from the Sunbow cartoon. Cobra Commander was a bit ruthless in the Marvel comic. His own son was a prisoner at one time and then tried to execute him and was put on trial for it. Speaking of, we could relate more to CC as a human when he and Billy reconciled only to see him get shot in the back by the coward Fred VII. Though he cared for his troops and shared their danger, Serpentor was basically a cyborg.

I would say that comicverse CC is a bit more ruthless (especially handled by DW and IDW), but I'm referring to the CC we grew up watching. The comicverse Megatron is a walking genocide, but many haven't read it. The Prime Megs is still awesome and very few forms of Megs are sad (Armada!). But in most toon forms, CC is a failure and a sissy. Not until Resolute and Renegades did I see a worthy CC.

I loved Mind Bender putting him together, Serpentor nimself and his connection to Cobra La, one of the best Story Arcs Joe had, and the most unrealized and underrated. It was such an underutilized arc, I wish they would come up with a way to revisit it, yes his I command statement got overwhelming at times but you know every at the time was running aorudn saying on the playground....thats where the our sense of entitlement started...make us more joes THIS...I COMMAND!
