I have been trying for the last 3 years to find something that looks like the reactive armor worn by the Joes in GI Joe: Rise of Cobra. I have noticed Adam on Mythbusters sometimes wears a jacket that kinda looks like it, and in the opening of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Jimmy Kimmel also wears a similar jacket when he is shown repelling.
I am interested in getting something similar in hopes to create a costume for Comic Con. I have searched for motorcycle armor, repelling gear, and so on with no luck. Has anyone here been able to find something that might work? |

Considering how well loathed the Reactive Armor is around here (even though it went on to great use in figures after the first wave of Roc), I doubt many have tried to replicate it.

Yeah dude, the majority of us hated the reactive armor suits. The name alone is effin insulting to anyone who knows how reactive armor actually works.
You'll have much better luck asking around cosplay forums.

I guess I'm one of the few who really love the RIA look of the Joes in RoC as well as the figures. Dainese has made jackets and vests with external armor plating over the years that has looked dead on like the ROC RIA. I check out their SF store every now and then and have seen the stuff you're after since 2009 season after season- but you can check them out online if you're not near a store. Their stuff's mighty expensive though...

Some motorcycle vests have a similar look. Specifically the gear used for dirt bikes.

Ah, thank you.
I liked the look too. My problem was never with the look of it. I just hate the name. Reactive armor explodes when hit! It litterally blows the eff up and away. If your a tank thats awsome. If your a person that sucks cause....well cause your exploding. They could of called it Next-Armor, Joe-skin, combat plated suit, flex plates, ballistic suit armor, robo future suit bullets b-gone jumpsuit. any of those would be less intellectually insulting than "Reactive Armor". And again Blackjack, dude, jump on some Cosplayer forums and post a picture of what you want. Some of those otaku dudes are really effing good at building solid costumes for dirt cheap.

A simple image google search for "reactive impact armor" shows some real life stuff very close to movie armors. It's a easy way to start looking.

It's "reactive" because it reacts with impact, absorbing it (duh!) Basically, it's -usually-worn by drivers, bikers or extreme sports guys. It absorbs impact, not completely, but helps a lot. I guess in the movie they use them because the Viper's blasting guns aren't lasers but... well, blast-impact weapons. Makes sense and looks cool. I don't think that many people hated them particularly, just that there weren't classic arah clothes.
