I have to go. I (we've all) have been waiting 27 years to see GI Joe on the big screen. I'm so torn and I can't help but be excited in spite of all the evidence that this movie will tear apart my favorite thing from childhood.

The most convincing answer I've heard so far is that they've lost the rights to the name Roadblock, but they're still going to use his likeness because he's such an iconic figure. However, I'm not sure how they can use the likeness but not the name. It just doesn't make any sense to portray Roadblock with another Joe's name. Why not just say Roadblock's new name is Blockade or something, so people aren't confused who this guy is supposed to be.

Maybe they did lose the rights to the name Roadblock when the movie was in production (remember, it takes years to make a movie, so Heavy Duty in the movie has been around since before Roadblock was released as part of the 25th line). It could be that simple.
I really hope it is a Q&A question. Just to point out, and I said this in high school many years ago and got a great debate going, I'd shoot anyone that tried to burn the american flag. You know it's againist the law to let it fall to the ground? And if it does hit ground, you can't ever use that flag again? Deckard's signature is Megaforce, a movie from the '80s. Megaforce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I'm going to go watch the movie and i'm going to go with an open mind, and it seems like I'm one of the few that is capable of that. I'm as upset at the changes as everyone else is, but I'm capable of looknig past all that and enjoying it as it stands. The cartoon had alot of changes from the comics and the toyline. Hell, G.I.Joe: The Movie had Falcon as Duke's brother. That was a major change. Did that ruin my enjoyment of it? No. Did it mean it wasn't G.I.Joe? No. It was just a different version of it. Oliver, yeah, if the 'Noks were used that way, and toned WAY DOWN, then they could work in the movie. I hate the Dreadnoks as they are shown in cartoons and the comics. The way they are described and the way they are portrayed are two different extremes.

You know, I've always had great admiration for soldiers and people who willingly put themselves in harm's way for a greater good, even though war is the supreme tragedy. WWII veterans in particular have always held a special place in my heart, but it does not offend me when someone burns a flag because I know that it is a symbol and though you can destroy a symbol, you can never destroy what the symbol stands for. No one has ever died for a flag in my opinion. Soldiers have died for the men next to them--their brothers in arms--their country's freedom, the freedom of others, the right to self-determination and the freedom to say what you want. So though I'm always disappointed to hear that someone has burned a flag or hung it upside down because I think that it sends the wrong message and disrespects veterans in particular, I know deep down that America's greatness is not embodied in a piece of cloth. Rather it's greatness comes from those who fight to make it better, whether it's on the battlefield, behind a pulpit, in a school or in a courthouse.

Troynoa its not that I don't have an open mind about this film, its just I don't have a desire to see something that is quite obviously so far from what made this franchise great. Its going to be another bland, pointless action film with a tired plot and subplot (baroness wanting revenge on duke for humilating her by leaving her at the alter but really still has feeings for him) and piss poor actors in the roles of these characters.

I'm sorry, but most of the people against the movie come off as close-minded. "It's not the Joes I grew up with, it will suck and I haven't even seen any footage yet." There is no single incarnation of the Joes that is the same from one medium to the next. Hell, even the comics changed. Saying the movie isn't G.I. Joe is saying the cartoon isn't G.I.Joe and only the comics are the accepted medium. Or the cartoon is god and the comics suck. All the movie is is another version of G.I. Joe, albeit this has the most concept changes, but at it's core it's still G.I. Joe vs. Cobra. No offense, but alot of people bashing the movie are coming off as petty. "It's not what I want", "It's not what I remember". As far as I'm concerned, there's Comic-Duke, Figure-Duke, Cartoon-Duke and soon Movie-Duke (and the same for all the other characters). Hell, pretty soon we'll have Marvel-Comic-Duke, DDP-Comic-Duke and IDW-Comic-DUke. And really, why's it matter that Rip-Cord is black in the movie as long as he's the same core character? The bigger question that should be asked is: WHY RIP-CORD?? Why put Rip-Cord in the movie over someone else?

I don't know, but I HATE that their doing this!
I'm not going to rant about the lack of Joes from the South, but Roadblock is the only Mississippian on the Joe team, and Heavy Duty is from Illinois where there are plenty of Quality Joes: Grid-Iron and Free Fall come to mind immeadiately. That's a shame and an injustice - It's a crock! But there are plenty more reasons. 1. Roadblock is a much better name - way cooler. It's two syllables that just sort of roll of the tongue. It's way easier to say, than the 4-syllable "Heavy Duty". 2. Roadblock is a Ranger. Heavy Duty is not. 3. The Comic book - Roadblock is one of the toughest, most accomplished, longest standing Joes on the team. He was the best, toughest Machine Gunner they had and had his first appearance along side Duke at General Flagg's funeral where he promptly shot down a Cobra Aircraft with a .50 cal that he held by himself. Anybody recall the time he was on a Mission in Sierra Gordo with Flint, Lady Jaye and the October Guard?... he volunteered to stay behind to hold off the advancing tanks with no hope of escape, and carried a man out to safety. Or the time they were evacuating an embassy and he endangered himself to go and get the American flag before they left? When the ambassador asked why he bothered to save a flag over anything else, like an expensive computer, Roadblock just casually said, "Nobody ever died for a computer." He was everything a Joe should be. 4. The rhyming thing was only in the show, but even in the show he was Awesome - anybody remember how he sacrificed himself to save Flint in "Pyramid of Darkness", and then went on to almost singlehandedly attack and defeat Cobra Temple? Awesome. - Absolutely one of the toughest Joes in the Comic or the Cartoon. 5. What has Heavy Duty ever done? Ever? I may never get over this! Wow, well said my friend. I was going to throw in my 2 cents, but this sums it up PERFECTLY. ROADBLOCK NOT heavy duty!!!! |

and how they can use his likeness but not his name?!? are you serious? they created his likeness and own it, so they can't lose the rights to it (well, at least not for 100 years, or as long as the Mickey Mouse rule continues to get extended). Hasbro can never lose the right to use their design, they can simply lose the right to prevent others from using it -- big difference between the two. the most simple reason is probably the truest -- with Heavy Duty being in the movie, and Hasbro's obvious reduction of the two characters to their simplest characteristics -- black machine gunners - -Hasbro simply wants to use the Heavy Duty name from here on out on any character that is a black machine gunner for consistency with the movie. I am certain they could care less whether his file name is Marvin Hinton or LaMont Morris, and if IDW chooses to make the character look like Roadblock and use Roadblock's file name, but call him Heavy Duty, that is their choice. they could probably just as easily make him the actual Heavy Duty character, but they had already started production and design for the character to be Roadblock before Hasbro told them to use the Heavy Duty name, so they stuck with the design and simply renamed their Roadblock character Heavy Duty. so, Hasbro is the one that is fazing out Roadblcok, but they could care less whether the Roadblock character is renamed Heavy Duty or Heavy Duty simply takes his place.
