Makes sense in the 1st SFOD-D to have that many E-9s, I guess, given their stringent selection process. Personally though, I think that can potentially lead to a top heavy organization... too many senior NCOs (especially with redundant ranks) can be just as crippling to a unit as too few (that old chestnut about too many cooks spoling the soup).
The "too many senior NCOs" problem isn't an issue with, say, a standard 12 man Special Forces "A" Detachment (where the minimum rank for entry, AFAIK, is E-7) that specializes in unconventional warfare and FID (foreign internal defense), since each man is expected to be a leader and adviser for their own assigned group of local soldiers/paramilitary men (hence their use as a "force multiplication" asset). In a platoon-sized direct action unit, however, a single E-7 should be enough to handle most duties required of a unit's senior NCO. This is actually reflected in practice, as the US Armed Forces' two premier direct action units, the 75th Ranger Regiment and the SEAL Teams, don't really proportionately have significantly more E-7s, E-8s, or E-9s than standard military units. What they do have is a disproportionately low number of E-3s (there are practically no E-3s attached to SEAL Teams, from what I've read) and a disproportionately large number of E-4s and E-5s (roughly half of the Ranger Regiment's enlisted component is comprised of E-4s, while roughly half of the SEAL teams is composed of E-5s... in most other units, about 50% of the enlisted complement is composed of E-3s). The Joe team has a large number of E4, E5 and E7s. I see Duke as the team E-9, with the Direct Action Squad Leaders (Stalker, Gung-Ho, etc..) being E-8s. Dusty would be an E-7, not a leader but high enough that he can take charge if has to and the rest of the squad wouldn't have toes stepped on (so to speak) and he could give "suggestions" to the squad leader and have the leader respect those suggestions.

I'm going to have to lay out everyone to see how big my teams end up being. but the 12 man teams work. So I don't see too much of a problem with a high number of E-6s and E-7s if the Joes function like the Green Berets and Delta Force. I've grown up with most of my Joes so promotions everywhere.

I'm almost done getting my Joe-Force organized. Why can't I ever think of names when it's for my own Joes?

My only suggestion is change out Ripcord's chute. You have him wearing a round chute, when he should be wearing a square ram-air chute. Free-fall chutes have the reserve on the back. I know you're trying to recreate the classic, but since everyone's getting updated might as well fix that. Keep up the good work.

BTW, for those of you who are curious as to how I make these images, I'm doing a "behind the scenes" look at the Snake-Eyes image I'm working on with fellow tanker Spigou in this thread.

Amazing Zulu. I like this version of Dusty. You got him as Outback on the File Card though. Are you making Outback a Green Beret? (Not that he already isn't one of those that should be considered a Green Beret anyway) What is a Quarrying Specialist? Is this to give him the Demolitions background like on the OG filecard? I'm just curioius about that choice.

Ok so what is the battle of washington? I love this structure since it makes more sense with the various support personnel and the typical squad setup under a Senior NCO. Like a full Platoon and a HQ element in your Operations Team. I'm unclear about the Gung-Ho squad? Is that just the new recruits? Backup? That squad isn't set up in any way. Does anyone know how many men make up a Special Forces Company? It's not 40 is it? Like 4 squads such as a traditional platoon? |
