2002's GI Joe Reservist may have been the last mail-away figure before the 25th/modern era began. It existed in the same mental space as the Steel Brigade figures, in that it was a generic Joe.
I don't think it included any sort of customizable card, but I don't remember. The figure was a mess of New Sculpt era parts. I did my best to streamline them here. Last edited by Clockwise; 02-04-2022 at 06:25 PM.. |

Just came bagged, I believe. Mine is currently up on the ‘Bay.
Nice work on all of your figure art!

This would be an awesome figure. I dig it a lot!

I love the concept of a Joe trooper.
Speaking of New Sculpt and Steel Brigade, these were cool: https://www.yojoe.com/action/06/checkpoint.shtml |

The last mail away before modern era was Valor vs Venom Storm Shadow with removable mask.
Before that, Spy Troops Agent Faces, the last vintage o-ring style mail away. I never sent off for the GI JOE Reservist, but IIRC, the file cards and code names were generated by Hasbro. |

I got that when I joined the Joe vs Cobra club.
My code name is Crash Jumper. They gave me the rank of Lt Col. It came with a T-shirt, dog tag, and a newsletter.

Thanks, all.
I notice that now people can talk about the NS era without outright bashing it. That makes me happy. If anything, people are really starting to turn on the early 25A figures. Who would've thought that would ever happen? |

There were many great figures in the New Sculpt era, but admittedly, I hate the Reservist’s t-crotch build.

I never minded the t-crotch figures, even the first wave of NS which didn't have the o-ring. Blasphemous, I know. I was more frustrated by the ridiculously short upper bodies that came out after the first wave.
On some figures, like Indiana Jones, the t-crotch works better with the overall design. But for a lot of joes- especially ninjas/underwater types- the socket joint makes so much more sense. |

Ooh, never saw this original figure before, love what you did with the design! Great pose, line work is incredible, as always. Then the shine on the rifle and the goggles, the movement on the fur, all top notch! Really awesome facial expression too.
I have a couple of the New Era sculpts, still need to get them out in their own section for a display. Mine all seemed to be very different sizes, really need to get them on a shelf to really get an idea of what my true feelings for them are. Initial thoughts are that they have a charm about them that I think if I collected them at the time, I?d probably really like them. They were at least something new which is always appealing to me. Love hearing the mail in stories as well, one of the things I miss most about modern toy lines. Guess it?s a good thing they went away though since then I?d be buying more things just to get surprise figures in the mail. Haha.
