What I do know is that people seem to get around things if they really want to. Going back to the new fees I have already seen pleanty of people try to beat the system and get around this already by placing an absurd amount of money for the shipping & handling fees. Let's say you have an item that you want to make about $20 from. What's stopping someone from setting the item to "Buy It Now" for 99 cents or even 1 cent for that matter. Then they can simply slap on $30 for the shipping and handling fee. The $10 is to cover the shipping and the $20 is your "handling" fee. That way you would only owe Ebay money on the 99 cents or less "Buy It Now" price. I'm sure this would put them out of business eventually though. Does Ebay have a policy on the shipping and handling price? Shipping as we all know is the price that the post office tells us that it's gonna cost to ship the item to the customer, but handling is a whole other story. That's strickly up to the seller. Let's say it takes you about an hour to pack the item and drive to the post office, wait on line, and then drive home when you are done. How much money do you think you would make per hour if this was your real job as a delivery person? Maybe you feel that you are worth $10 an hour, maybe $20 an hour. Hey what do the Fed Ex, USPS, and UPS people make per hour? That's "handling" and Ebay shouldn't be able to tell you what to charge for that. So now go out and sell that Flagg for 99 cents as a "Buy It Now" with a $400 shipping and handling fee. |

Doesn't work for long. You might get away with it for an auction or two. But you're going to get flagged and kicked off ebay for upping shipping like that. Even if you up shipping only twice what it should cost to ship, buyers will give you a low rating on shipping and handling. If your seller ratings dip to low it affects you on item searches and if it gets low enough you won't be able to list at all.

After reading what you guys have posted I still think that the seller has every right to decide what their "handling" fee is. That has nothing at all to do with the shipping side of things and Ebay or the buyer should have no say over it. It's called "shipping & handling" for a reason. The company that you use to ship the item determines the "shipping" price. As far as the "handling" of the item goes that is to be determined by the seller. I guess if the prospective buyer doesn't like it then they don't have to click on the "Buy It Now" button to purchase it. It's just like how we are not allowed to argue over the prices someone has in the B/S/T thread. If you don't like it move along. I don't like the "scalper" prices just as much as you guys don't, and I would love to voice my oppinions about it, but that's frowned upon here. So with that said I just simply look for the next person who has a price to my liking.

Well like I said in my original post that I have never sold anything on Ebay before so I really don't know about their polices.
After reading what you guys have posted I still think that the seller has every right to decide what their "handling" fee is. That has nothing at all to do with the shipping side of things and Ebay or the buyer should have no say over it. You may think that, but it's ebay who owns and runs the site, so what they think is what happens. No matter how much all of us complain about it they just keep doing jerk moves to their seller community because they really have nowhere else to go that has as large a buyer base for many of the categories on their site. But to say it's not ebay's business what the seller charges? Come on, it's just being a cheap ass if you put down 10 to 20 times the actual shipping and handling cost to avoid ebay fees. I have no pity for people who sell like that and get kicked off. If you're really that desperate, go to the forums. About what Georox said about ebay refunding exhorbitant shipping charges, I'm not down with this. If the auto calculator tells you how much it's going to cost to ship, that's what it is and you know this going in when you buy it. If it's the seller trying to skip on ebay fees charging 50 bucks for a 2 dollar item that's one thing, but if the shipping is twice to three times normal postage, the buyer knows this going in and shouldn't be allowed to take back from the seller because he thought it was too much after the fact. |

Even if eBay do lower their fees, the long term strategy is shaft us for every penny they can.
I'm not expert on these things, but shouldn't they be held to account for the combination of the fact they have a monopoly on online auctions, and are forcing a payment system they own as well? |
