Love this project. It looks like you have a great start. My advice would be to cut small pieces of styrene to fill as much as you can. Then use tamiya putty to fill remaining gaps, let it dry overnight, then sand it smooth. I've also used cheap Bondo and that works well, the stuff used on car body work. I smoothed out a Moray hull in this way. My biggest advice would be just keep at it. You can always cut things off and try again. I've hit roadblocks on projects in the past and wanted to quick but just pushed through and learned a lot in the process. And it's great you're starting with junkers so you don't feel precious about the base toy.
