What do you guys use to mask before painting?
I just used old postage stamp leftover sticker and wasn't sticky enough. I figured I'd just hold it long enough to dab some paint on, but paint was too watery and don't have the distinct shapes. Doesn't look too bad. If I could remove some paint with precision, it would be better. EDIT: I know hand sanitizer has alcohol, so put a tiny bit on a Q-tip and scrubbed off a bit of stray paint and looks so much better, but still looks like weathered or spray painted. I'm happy with it, but might put on a bit more paint to make some parts more solid rather than have the spray paint look. Last edited by ohtani; 09-05-2022 at 09:41 PM.. |

I second the blue painter?s tape. Just sticky enough to grab onto the figure, then pulls off nicely to give you some pretty cleans lines after some touching up.

I use frog tape for masking bigger projects like vehicles.

Thanks for the tips. I underestimated the pre-paint prep. Too much paint here or too little paint there makes a difference. I was too eager to finish.
After the fact, I thought what if I used rubber cement to mask first. |

I don't mask at all. Seems like a hassle

Yes a hassle. I bought Tamiva's small masking tape a long time ago. It's like a mini reel of blue masking tape. It really doesn't work well on sculpted figures, especially 3.75, and I never used it for figures I've posted.
Intead I eyeball edges as a final step, multiple small light strokes to try to keep the edge straight, solid, and continuous. Then clean up using a light scraping technique with an exacto knife after it dries a little. Again light multiple scrapes, kinda reverse painting. We used that knife technique back in technical drafting classes when using technical ink pens on mylar. |

Haha, I?ll see one of Rob?s customs with super clean line work and think ?next time I?m gonna use tape so my lines come out that crisp!? Then it really is a hassle to walk into the other room and grab that tape so I end up just going freehand.
The three customs that I did use tape on though.....they had some nice clean Rob quality lines!
