Anyone know how to paint unpaintable plastic. https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Unpaintable_plastic
I ran into an issue customizing the Adventure Force jeep, the tan sleeper assembly on the roof is completely made of unpaintable plastic. Nothing I have binds to it, I've tried a black spray primer, several types of spray paint, gesso, acrylic paints, and even modpodge. This stuff is like teflon nothing sticks to it at all and it starts peeling off with the slightest touch. Every thing I've tried just peels off it in solid strips like it has been soaked in acetone, I've never encountered anything like it before. You might give this a try:

Or lightly sand the whole thing and see if the texture gives the paint something to cling to.

give self etching primer a shot.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dark-Gree...12-oz/16816075 i had some plastic from a poster frame i was using as a panel on a ship build and i 1: didnt want to sand it and put gouges into it 2: didnt think anything would stick to it because it was so smooth. so i gave that a shot and it worked really well. i even messed up the top coat a few times and the primer stayed on after paint removal. another hting you might want to try is wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol. in a "i'll show you who's boss" manner, after it dries do the self etching primer. |

I don't know if the size will work but Jurassic Park's Amber Collection Robert Muldoon has a similar hat to Recondo.

Question about paint removal. Was stripping the camo off a Classified Stalker using Acetone. The arms and legs worked fine with me immediately running the part under water and then giving it a soapy scrub. The black camo pattern came right off with no melting.
But the torso seems like a different plastic and the acetone attacked it hard leaving a white cloudy layer behind. Tried an other go with the Q-tip of acetone and it just moved the cloudiness around. I'm thinking acetone is too harsh on the torso plastic no matter how fast I move. A little research gave "Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer" high marks for remvoing paint without melting plastic. However I also found they changed the formula (but not the UPC) to just "Brush Cleaner" and that people complain it no longer works nearly as well. Stopped by Jo-Ann/Michaels/Hobby Lobby and could only find the new formula and nothing with "Cleaner and Restorer" in-stock. Images on Amazon and online retailers all show the old bottle because the product number didn't change, but I see complaints that new formula was shipped. Any opinions on the Winsor & Newton brush Restorer? Anyone having luck with the new formula? Any suggestions for other chemicals? I did try 90% Isopropal Alcohol and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser but it was super slow going and the Magic Eraser started sanding off details. No white residue, but still did damage to the sculpt. The first torso will get moved to another project where I can prime and paint over the cloudy white bits. But thanks to Ollie's/Ross I've got another Stalker that I'd like to clean off as I want to use that shade of green without painting over. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Yeah, acetone in a no-go on hard plastics unless you’re very meticulous, and even then it’s rarely effective enough to be worth the risk.
Don’t have any better ideas for you, though. I normally just paint completely over the old paint

My good sir ,have you ever tried? green stuff worlds? plastic safe paint remover , it use to be sold by another company years ago , it seems to be the same formula as the green stuff remover is it smells exactly the same it will melt soft plastic like the clear plastic they use on droids like K-2SO or the joints in classified shoulders . Use it sparingky and it should work , I ordered it from the uk and it arrived in 5 days after ordering it on a saturday afternoon . The bottle runs about $15 or so i ordered 2 because why not ,Hope this helps Just remembered another alternative is mineral spirits its not very hot like goo gone or acetone is .. Use sparingly ..
