That's a crazy amount of investment, but it definitely pays off and shows in your final product.
Here's one that's probably a longshot, but I've seen stranger heads casted in the past; anyone know of a headsculpt that resembles Rudy Ray Moore? Preferably a cast, since I'm not a big fan of buying figures for just one part. I want to get around to doing a Dolemite figure with an MTF suit eventually. https://starwarsgeek.ecrater.com/p/26133241/mh257 I think it looks like Apollo Creed, but maybe with paint, it could pass?

Thanks Ax, that might work! I'll keep it in mind (and check out the rest of his store, since I've only recently heard of him).

A Lando head might do in a pinch, as well. It’s got the hair anyway

Since I never shared my philosophy on customizing, and because I like the idea of this thread:
* I stick with BFS and MTF parts for almost everything, only using Hasbro stuff for heads, vests, backpacks, and some accessories. When I started out, I was customizing ME Joes, but everything kept coming out botched due to parts not meshing well, or the legs/arms would get floppy (a lot of my remaining ME figures cannot stand up anymore). My CC actually resulted from a failure to mimic another customizer's, where he put the 25th Viper's lower legs on him. After that just fell apart, I resolved to wait on the MTF German bodies were out (which I might have been more predisposed to do because I remember an old diorama where Cobra High Command and the Joes were depicted in a WWII aesthetic). I also like supporting the smaller companies & casters over Hasbro itself, just on the principal of helping out smaller businesses providing something I enjoy. * I don't paint joints (intentionally). I'm going to notice the joints whatever color they are at this scale, so I save myself the headache of trying to dremel them down, paint over them, and then hope they don't just rub off anyway. Also, I kept seeing recommendations to use super glue when I was starting out, and I always just scratched my head; every time I get super glue on something, it leaves a flakey white crust on it, so it would cover up the paint anyway, to my thinking. * I only build figures I want in my collection; I'm not a completionist as a collector, and neither am I as a customizer. If I don't care for a character, they're not going on my worktable. That said, I like a lot of Joe characters . * When MTF puts out the shirtless torsos, I assume they won't be the Adonis-like cuts that Boss Fight does. To that end, especially muscular guys will be made in BFS parts, as a compensation for not getting to give them increased stature (unless BFS does put out taller and shorter bucks, but I'm assuming thise would be closer to dwarf and ogre height, rather than "short guy" and "tall guy". * Accuracy to the original depends on how I'm feeling. Sometimes, I'll make a spot-on recreation of a figure, other times I'll take it somewhere else in my parts choices, or change the colors up a bit. For instance, my plan to make Cold Slither versions of the Noks includes changing up most of their outfits (except Zartan's) to look more Glam Metal, since I love the genre. * On colors, if I'm going to use an outlandish color (say, purple on SAW Vipers), I try to make it the only weird color in the design. It harks back to something Hit & Run said a while ago, about the oddly-colored guys in the 82-86 run, and Sci-Fi illustrates it perfectly. Yes, he's a very vivid toxic green, but that's the only weird color on him. It's accented with silver and black, which I think makes the bright color more appealing. * When it comes to army builders, I like subtle diversity; female troopers and Vipers, plus adding different skintones here and there. Of my six POC/30th Cobra Troopers, one was an officer, one was black, one Asian, one redheaded, one blonde, and the last was left as-is. Probably going to do similar with the troopers I build going forward (though I can only paint around the eyes with the balaclava heads, of course. * All logos I need come from Bad Mother Tattoos and Cobrastickers/Toyhax. Both have consistently provided me with good stuff when I've ordered, even if Toyhax's shipping takes a while. I first used BMT on my Cobra troopers, since I needed some logos for their chests. |

Looking forward to starting to mess with some stickers. To this point I haven’t done it at all so gonna be fun to mess with the few Cobra Sticker & Bad Mother ones I picked up.

Haha, I’m getting deeper and deeper into 93 & 94 that now I’m getting to the point where I accent weird bright colors with even weirder & brighter colors!

And I hope those work well for you. Toyhax's vinyl stuff is better on vehicles or very big flat surfaces on figures, whereas the Bad Mother stuff can fit on the rough surfaces better (though some of their tattoos make good noseart too). |

Probably depends too on how much someone accepts the Sci-fi elements of Joe. I accepted the Cobra-La stuff immediately so when the Joe’s started branching further and further from reality based neutral colors to heavier Sci-fi & brighter colors, it didn’t really push me away at all. I already had neon in Turtles & Toxic Crusaders and try as hard as they wanted, Joe wasn’t out doing Toxic Crusaders in bright colors. Haha, I was well conditioned for what was coming in the mid nineties.
Thanks for the tips! Should be fun to see how they work out for me, like anything, I’m sure there’s a learning curve but get easier to use once you learn some tricks.

That's also probably true, though I'd specify *zany* sci-fi elements, or even science fantasy (which I like better, in general). Which yeah, Joe is many things to many different people. I've never been able to really concretely define where I draw the lines myself.
And since you mention Toxic Crusaders, that reminds me that when Avacslab brings back the Toxie head in his store, I've gotta grab one. Him, Kabukiman, and maybe Mad Cowboy are some figures I've wanted to do for some time. Maybe a President Lemmy, too. |

Lately I’ve been looking again at all the great customs from long-time and newer customizers both 3.75” and 6.” Makes me feel kinda thirsty so I thought I’d stop by the water cooler with a question or two for everyone...
Name 1-2 customizers or customs that inspired you to start customizing -OR- Name 1-2 customizers or customs that inspire you today I’m looking forward to your answers (I’ll share mine later) |
