I really want to apply custom paint jobs to some of my vehicles but don't have a clue as to how to begin. If you could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.
1. How do you paint over slick and shiny plastic? Sand down first to make a rough surface onto which paint can adhere? Add primer? 2. What kind and brand of paint works well? Spray paint? Thanks in advance!!

I sand it with a really fine soft sand paper. Not to get the old paint off that doesnt matter really unless its a more dominant color then you are appling, for instance bright red you want to paint white. I have never primed any of my projects although my last project maybe could have used it.
I use Testors model enamel I get at the local Hoby store. I always use flat colors only I think gloss colors run and have mor streaks. Ideally you would want to use an airbrush but the spray cans do the trick too. I just apply the paint very lightly the less paint you spray on the quicker it dries and the fewer streaks you get then I sand any Streaks down and add another light coat continue until happy. Hope this is of some help. Practice on somthing you dont care if you screw up like a generic GI Joe vehicle. |

If you just want to paint details and not the WHOLE vehicle, you don't really need a primer or sand for that matter.
I do dry-brushing and the painting of rivets, bolts, lights, etc all the time with just a very small brush and Testors Acryl paints.

I agree with Krylon Fusion...
but one thing I never liked was sanding... since I'm not a pro or anything.. I always end up sanding too hard... I usually just wipe it down with alcohol and spray light coats.. wait for a bit and respray

When I'm repainting a vehicle, here's the steps that I take:
1) disassemble everything 2) wash everything with soapy warm water, let dry 3) test paint a small area to see what happens - does the paint stick? If so, proceed as normal 3a) if the paint does not stick, I'll lightly sand the surface with a very fine grit sandpaper (1200 grit or something along those lines) just to rough it up a little. 4) back to step 3 For vehicle painting, I generally use either Tamiya acrylics or Badger's Freak Flex acrylics in my airbrush, they are nice and thin already straight from the jar, but I usually add a little windex just to thin them out a bit more. As stated, start out with thin, light coats. It's always easier to add more paint than it is to try and remove too much.

Krylon Fusion is incredible, but you are limited by the colors. The Camo Green that Krylon makes is a little dark for GI Joe vehicles, but I like it.
And like everyone else has said LIGHT COATS!!! |

Where do you buy this revered "Krylon Fusion" paint? I'm excited to begin my project and would rather buy the paint in a store somewhere rather than wait a week for snail mail.

You can get it at Home De(s)pot, Lowe's, Orchard Hardware, ACE...primarily your dedicated home improvements stores. I've seen it, but haven't tried it. 'Tanks all for the great recommendation.
