This guy has been a long time coming. I didn't really remember him from childhood, and didn't even care for him until recently. But after watching the Sunbow series recently on DVD, my OCD took over since I have nearly every Sunbow Joe in 25th format, and I was still missing Sci-Fi (with a few more still in the pipeline for completion...stay tuned!).
I had put him off for months but he was continuously in my top 5, yet kept getting pushed because I just didn't have the right parts to make him perfect. Then I saw Tri-Gate had the head in their store, and I ordered it upon seeing it, along with my Lifeline and Monkeywrench heads. I absolutely love the heads; they're perfect! So, here he is, in his neon glory: |

The chest-plate was Dremeled straight off the vintage figure, as much as it pained me to do it. I hadn't seen another custom that was quite right in my eyes when it came to the chest plate, so I felt this was the best choice until Hasbro or Tri-Gate/Broken Arrows makes one. I Dremeled off the pockets from the Snow Job mold, and grafted it on using Super Glue and filling the gaps and shaping the upper vest with putty. I then sanded and painted the entire figure. The upper legs took a little modding to get the upper legs to "flow" into the skinnier lower Wraith legs, but the Mutt knees helped to gap it. I wanted to retain the great sculpted detail of the "pockets" and the little wiring on the side of the knee, but I did shave down the lower portion of the upper leg so it blended a little smoother.
I then painted the entire figure using custom-mixed Tamiya paints, and clear-coated it. Feedback much appreciated! Formula: Head: Tri-Gate Creations Torso, arms: Cobra Desert Trooper (Snowjob mold) Hands: RoC Snowjob (from Then/Now set) Upper legs/chest plate/gear: Vintage Sci-Fi Knees: Mutt Lower legs: Wraith Belt: Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes Last edited by Mandingo Rex; 07-12-2010 at 01:08 AM.. |

Your work is terrific.
Sci Fi is terrible. Seriously, that's absolutely perfect. I know how much a pain is to dremel off big portions of plastic (both frome arah Scifi, and the Ace/WW torso front pockets), so that alone is impressive. I can see you also painted the inside of the legs, that's anotehr minimal detail that many people doesn't pay attention, but adds to finishing look and sharpness. Just perfect.

Thanks fellas! I personally think Hasbro could make him with basically a new head and "glue-on" vest similar to BBQ or Blowtorch, but I honestly don't see him coming anytime soon. As far as existing legs, they could use Resolute SE, or even Snow Job uppers.

And yeah, it took some time and patience, to say the least. I screwed up on it dozens of times! Yeah, since I used the vintage legs, the sculpting was there, so I repainted the legs black on the inside to keep that detail. He's missing the striped/ribbed shoulder pads and elbow pads, and the vest stripes aren't green, but besides that I tried to keep him as accurate as possible. (RoC Reactive Armor Duke actually has arms that are oddly close to the vintage arms based off the card art... I almost used those.) The vintage card art and cartoon shows black elbow pads, but the original figure had these sculpted, but not painted. In the cartoon, too, he had a grey collar/neck with black stripes and no black on the inner leg, so his paint scheme is actually a hybrid of the 2 styles. I felt that the neck being green helped his outfit to look like a jumpsuit with armor plating on top, and the black stripes seemed to tie the overall deco together better, and minimize the green slightly. Glad you liked him! |
