Next up on the pulp-inspired figures is Dick Tracy.
I had an Indiana Jones fedora and Doctor trench coat come in the mail and figured why not give this a try. Sadly, the sleeves wouldn't allow me to do the wrist walkie talkie, but the Tommy gun from the Fortnite line was just right. The one thing I learned from this...yellow paint is a major pain. The amount of layers I had to put on this thing was insane. And this was supposed to be the easy custom! That being said, I'm happy with how it came out. I think he looks good next to the Rocketeer: Last edited by superby1; 09-04-2022 at 12:25 PM.. |

Very cool.
I've wanted to drum up a Tracy and those yellow paint issues you've discovered are exactly why I've been dragging my feet

Thanks, Axon! Gotta say, your custom of The Spirit showed me it could be done.
I pray I don’t have another character that has so much yellow. |

I was hoping you?d make Dick Tracy! He looks fantastic, that?s a great build for him! The jacket and fedora look perfect with the Marauder head and your suit. Then that Tommy gun was a great pull from the Fortnite line. Have to look in my bins and see if I have that. He?s such an awesome character and you definitely did him justice! Great job!
Did you paint the yellow right on the black or did you do a white base coat first? I paint a lot of neons & yellows, taking the time to lay down a solid white or off white (depending on how bright you want the yellow) first will make painting your yellow sooooo much easier. You?ll make up the time it takes you to do the base coat because it?ll save you several layers of yellow later. Haha. My first yellow figures were more paint than plastic before I learned that trick, especially when painting something from black to yellow. Sounds like you battled with the yellow with this one but the end result really did come out looking great!

Yellow paint has notoriously terrible coverage. You've got to prime and layer excessively for good color saturation, but also thin enough layers therein that you don't lose detail. Don't know what about yellow mixes that cause that, but it's the worst

I fixed it so they're not in the original post. Don't know what happened there. And thank you all for the great responses. Clearly I love pulp heroes and finding different ways to make them with Boss Fight, Marauders and Dime Novel Legends is so much fun. So far I have four done (Doc Savage, The Rocketeer, The Avenger and Dick Tracy) I'd still like to do The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, and maybe The Lone Ranger & Tonto (even though Flint Rocks has the definitive versions, in my opinion). There's a Marvel version of John Carter I'd like to try, so maybe that one is next on the list. We'll see. Right now the biggest challenge is looking for extra Hero H.A.C.K.S. stands. Those are hard to come by in the wild. Last edited by superby1; 09-04-2022 at 12:33 PM.. |

I havent started painting much yet, but plan on doing some game minitature. I had read somewhere that many people recommend putting down a pink layer or something before going over it with yellow. Just throwing that out there in case it works for anyone.

That could be a good idea! One of the coolest things about this hobby is there's always something new to learn.
