Fresh take on this two. Very creative parts selection

Thanks, everybody!

That?s a super creative Flash! I noticed the BF lower legs right away so I was trying to pick the parts before looking at the text to see what else I could spot. Somehow I totally missed the DN gloves! Really awesome build! He looks great!
Grand Slam looks incredible as well! Never saw those armor pieces before so really cool seeing them here because they definitely give the MTF bodies some fresh looks. The in flight pic is fantastic! Your OG13 is coming along nicely! Quote:
And the hits keep coming! Very creative builds here for the add-ons, definitely gives everyone a cool look and your viewers a fresh perspective! Many here have built the OG13, but your giving some old guards a new spin! I love the differences you have between the 2, and I think that Flash's helmet rig is just awesome! I have a Flash just starting to be in the works (not the OG version), & WIPS for Stalker/Breaker (just waiting for 1 key piece on both...) & I will have to get to Grand Slam at some point so I can also have *versions* of the 13.
Thanks for the thoughts and encouragement, everyone! More to come...

Breaker
Breaker was my first Joe way back in '82 and I've always had a soft spot for him. The big question with Breaker customs is beard or no-beard. Being a fan of the early Marvel comics, I'm a dyed in the wool no-beard man. For my custom, I wanted a head that suggested the same boyish quality that Herb Trimpe imbued the character with. I like the one I've used here, but I'm not completely sold on it. I have a cast on order that I want to try, but in the meantime, this one works well enough. Zap With this round I'm chest deep in the OG13 sea of green. The challenge with this group especially is finding ways to honor the uniformity of the original designs while still giving each figure a unique look and distinct character. The hats are a bit of a cheap trick in that regard, but I like it. It reminds me of the shorthand of comic books and old war movies, where distinctive headwear is often used to assist the audience in quickly differentiating characters. You'll also notice that Short Fuse and Zap have new/adjusted specialties. Zap is now the team's demolitions expert. Once again, my love of WWII commando movies is evident here, with Zap playing a little homage to both David Niven's and Anthony Quinn's characters from The Guns of Navarone, among others. I originally stuck a green cap on him, then a black. Both were fine, but didn't add much. The ordered the red for another purpose, but once I tried it on ol' Zap here, there was really no question as to where it truly belonged. I also like how it evokes the red collars of the early Joe comics. Short Fuse Short Fuse has glasses. That's really the full extent of his character. His file offers little more insight into his character beyond what his code-name already suggested. He's got a quick temper, you see. For the purposes of this set, I see Short Fuse as the dude in the war movie that everyone kind of hates. He's a reliable soldier and good in combat, but he's also quick to pick a fight over some perceived slight and feels it's his righteous duty to play devil's advocate regardless of the topic of conversation. To my eye at least, the MTF Logan head has that sort of pugnacity about it. I stole the idea for the hat from sgcaper's Private Meekly custom. This one reminds me of Telly Savales' character from The Dirty Dozen. Obviously, Savales' Maggott is an infinitely more contemptible character than Short Fuse's run of the mill asshole, but SF's flipped up brim should still stand as a warning.

Great to see these guys updated.
You're absolutely right about how there's not much to work with in terms of Short-Fuze's personality. Aside from smart nerd with a temper, Hama left him on the vine. Where you see the character as pugnacious and self-righteous, I've always seen him more as frustrated and put-upon, like Star Trek's Chief O'Brien. He's one of my favorite OG, along with Steeler, Stalker, and Hawk. The problem with the OG is that there are none of them I dislike, and wish the team's roster would've been limited to them for longer than it was. Were the goggles a stand-in until you can find some proper specs? Just curious. The addition of the gloves also gives him of bad assery that really works. A small detail, but a smart one. Amazing work, all the way around. |

Thanks! My next round will feature more intensive customization beyond paint and parts swaps. Stay tuned!

Sorry I haven't commented on you O13 sooner, but I have been following along, here and at Joecustoms. I assume you and most others know I've got a thing about O13 (!). I always love seeing someone take on the full set, and delving to what their own concept of the group means (and often influencing my own, or in this case my next one).
At this point in my life I've got my own strong thoughts about a O13 figure set--honestly a lot that are different from your takes here--but appreciate the info behind you thoughts behind the design decisions. I'm waiting until we see the whole group together before getting too deep with thoughts, as that is a big component of the group for me. It's also quite a task in of itself to get through them all, as you are probably finding out (essentially two or three standard size waves or teams, yet meant to be one). For now, if anything keep it at 13 to start--no more no less. |

I really like the ingenuity of this latest batch. I never thought I?d find myself saying this, but I think Grand Slam is my favorite. I really like the pads on this guy, and I know the AWOK armor is out there, but I was never really convinced if it?s effectiveness. My concerns have really been put to rest here. I think the pearlescent color looks great, and I like the pads done over the front of the legs. I guess my only nitpick is the way the AWOK vest shoulder straps seem really high. If I got that armor (and if I had the energy) I might sand those straps down a bit.
I really like the short sleeve button-down on Breaker. Great idea. Great round! I also am a really big fan of the OG13.
