FIGURE 4: SEA ADVENTURER
Our fourth figure is the Sea Adventurer, perhaps the most popular character of the main original 1970 Adventure Team, and by far my favorite of my first four Adventure Team customs! My suspicion is that when most people think of the GI Joe Adventure Team, they're likely talking about the Air, Sea, and Land Adventurers, with perhaps the enigmatic Black Adventurer thrown in. This makes Skip here a necessary inclusion in any Adventure Team collection, as the Collector's Club realized when they paired him with a submersible during the brief 25th Anniversary Adventure Team run. I never had any of those figures. Candidly, I think those figures look pretty darn bad by modern standards, so while I appreciate their inclusion from a historical perspective, the crudity of their construction, their dubious parts choices, and their outrageous price all combined to inspire me to try to do better myself. With three characters wearing simple green fatigues ahead of this one, I was more than eager to dip into some different colors and push beyond the Zica Toys heads that had served so well for Mike Triumph and Jonathan Steele. I also thought that the three shades of green I used to create depth on the green fabric turned out a bit too subtle, so I wanted to try a deeper contrast with the light and dark blues of the Sea Adventurer's outfit. Let's see some additional angles. I was very satisfied with my results here, thanks in no small part to this head from the AngelForge. Inspired, I decided to get really ambitious with my next figure... an experiment that didn't quite pay off as well as I had hoped.... But that's a story for my next post! STINGRAY RECIPE HEAD: AngelForge cast head TORSO & ARMS: Marauder WW2 US Marine WAIST & UPPER LEGS: Marauder WW2 US Marine LOWER LEGS & FEET: Marauder Contract Ops REVOLVER: Marauder WW2 RIFLE: No idea. Found it on eBay. Pretty sure it's 3D printed. SHOULDER HOLSTER: POC General Hawk Last edited by Erik Mona; 04-15-2021 at 09:56 PM.. |

Nice painting on the Sea Adventurer's head. That's commendable; I would've just bought the heads I needed from Marauder and called it a day.

Pretty sure I scoped these on one of the other groups, but they look dope. Clean paint and great homaging.

I posted all of these to the Facebook Marauder and MoJoes groups about 9 months ago. In prepping them for here, I re-took a lot of the photos as I hadn't archived full turn-arounds or close-ups for all of them. And hey, the filecards are new! |

Bolstered by my Sea Adventurer custom and excited to try something even more ambitious, I next turned by attention to another of the Adventure Team's key field operatives--the Air Adventurer! I was really pleased with the results on the sculpted Afro I'd added to Commander Black, so I decided that modeling putty would once again come to the rescue to solve one of this project's thorniest challenges. But before I get into that, and the... shall we say mixed results, let's take a quick look at a side-by-side with the original figure. Unlike the previous figures, who all wore fatigues or jackets that were relatively easily approximated by the Marauder US Marine WW2 buck, the Air Adventurer came with a bright orange flight suit with a zipper running from neck to crotch. The base Marauder Trooper buck has a similar zipper, but _none_ of the other details matched the Air Adventurer's sleek look. The closest I could come was Marauder's WW2 British Soldier figure, but instead of a zipper he had buttons, and instead of a sleek jumpsuit he wore a military dress shirt with pockets. Faced with no good prospects, I decided to cover the pockets and elements of the original belt and waist with modeling putty, taking care (I thought) to use just the right amount. As the final results show, it's a mixed bag. At this point in my customizing hobby (about a dozen figures in), I definitely didn't know just how little putty you actually need for a job like this, and in fact I'm still struggling with this to some degree. Let's look at a couple more angles to see how it worked out. The fact is, there's too much putty on this figure. I think it looks ok on the right breast and waist, but that left breast is a killer, and some of the putty even cracked as it dried. Yuck! To make matters a little bit worse, my first "finished" version of this figure had a much lighter hair color that better matched the original figure, but next to the vibrant orange jumpsuit it looked drab and uninteresting. I was pretty unhappy with it for a long time, and even now I'm a little trepidatious about posting it and bringing more attention to it. My happiness with this take on the Air Adventurer increased significantly when I added bright yellow hair. These days, I'd definitely use a (very small amount of) putty to fill in the sides of his beard instead of just painting the bare cheeks, but all in all I think this turned out ok. I'm actually very happy with the zipper. Remembering that I chose the Adventure Team specifically to work on my customizing fundamentals, I'd say the biggest lesson from this figure is that when it comes to sculpting, use as little putty as possible, and be sure to blend it to the surface of the figure as smoothly and thinly as possible, as the lines _will_ show through, especially in photographs (again, something I'm still struggling with 15 customs later). And don't rush past the small stuff like patching up the beard. Months later, I'd finally add a full beard to the same Marauder head for an ARAH Rock n' Roll, but that's a story for another thread! SKY HAWK RECIPE HEAD: Marauder (the bearded one that is always sold out) TORSO, ARMS, & WAIST: Marauder British Soldier with sculpting LEGS: Marauder Contract Ops jeans REVOLVER: Marauder WW2 SHOULDER HOLSTER: POC General Hawk Slowly but surely, the Adventure Team's field operatives are coming together! With Air and Sea behind us, Land cannot be much farther behind! Last edited by Erik Mona; 04-17-2021 at 09:52 PM.. |
