Thank you all for the kind words and also the constructive criticism. Tonight I have one new figure and one tweak to a previous figure. Let’s take ‘em in order, shall we?
I never had this figure as a kid, but I liked it well enough. I can appreciate it more today as an adult, but I still feel it’s got some drawbacks. The head get-up is a little confusing to me. The small-slit visor looks antiquated and, although the camouflage is fine, the purple-y red is weird to me. Now, for my version of the Night Creeper, I wanted to stick with the stock MTF purple of the Engineer-Ops…but paint matching has always been very hard for me (I did the best I could). This guy is straightforward. Nothing we haven’t all seen before. NIGHT CREEPER (V1): 1990 Next up is a continuing work in progress. Originally, I just built this figure using a cast head of Arctic Dr. Mindbender, purple shirt, purple bandolier, with armored yellow legs and vintage weapons. It got the point across, but I was never satisfied. Months later, I decided to try sculpting his headset. I somehow managed to build the headpiece, but it is a screaming testament to my mediocrity. Dr. Mindbender looked better than before, so I stopped messing with him and put him back on the shelf. I kept staring at him on the shelf thinking he could be better, so I took him down and tweaked him some more. Now his bandolier is yellow to more emulate the vintage figure. I glued some armor panels over his right shoulder to mimic whatever-the-hells he’s got over his shoulder on the original figure. I painted his side-pads purple (although it’s hard to tell next to the yellow of the legs) and tried to add some detail to his headset. I’ve used some neon yellow to bring out the little arbitrary knobs, bloops, and bleeps on there DR. MINDBENDER (V2): 1993 …Oh! Also wanted to show you an attempt to make a more “robust” Pathfinder weed-whacker than what he had originally. Just glued 4 chainsaw attachment parts to a steady-cam gun. Highly impractical and silly, but also something I wanted to do since I wasn’t inclined to make the “under-slung” backpack-attached double machine guns… And I figure the gun’s ammo drum could now just be a gas canister. He can definitely stay frosty now.

The Night Creeper and Pathfinder (love that weapon) have some really nice updates... But big props on that awesome Mindbender!

Creeper looks super sharp. Miss the garish colors on Pathfinder though.

Oh, don’t worry. Pathfinder will get his goofy aqua and orange camouflage.

Oddly enough, I’m more familiar with the second version of this figure than the first. I was eyebrow-deep into G.I.Joe during years ‘82, ‘83, and ‘84…but was out of Joe by ‘85 (although I would continue getting Joe comics up until issue #65 or so). Then, later on, I started getting a few ‘93 and ‘94 figures for nostalgic purposes. I remember getting the Star Brigade Astro-Viper mainly for the colors, but -DANG! - that goofball helmet.
Well, I decided to go with the more popular version of the Astro-Viper for my Joerauder version…and I did the helmet in red as I like that better. It seems to be the more popular helmet color for a lot of you out there as well. Two points of interest: 1.) spray-painting the small armor panels gold came out surprisingly clean and crisp. 2.) I don’t know if it comes through on the pics, but I dabbed a little bit of silver on the leg-pegs near the knee to denote mechanical additions to the uniform. ASTRO-VIPER (V1): 1988
