I love these. You're one of the customizers that Hasbro should take inspiration from!

Thanks for the compliment Stalker. But the truth is, I take inspiration from Hasbro's design and product. They've made great stuff, and I just tweak the hell out it. Plus, they didn't have 7+ years to tinker with just a few figures!

Man these are awesome! I especially love the comic book version of figures! You're gonna have to post individual pictures of each of these! I really want to see close-ups of Clutch and Short-Fuse, they are two favorite customs you posted.

GiJoe_O13-7AllFigures0_2018-0421b by J Perez, on Flickr So, the last month was spent trying to get updated photos of my G.I. Joe O13 sets (while also enjoying the OreoBuilder O13 show!). Finally, I think I'm ready to post these throughout the coming months, with thoughts, notes, recipes. The upcoming posts will concentrate on individual characters separately, and my different versions of each character, with emphasis on my final 25th Anniversary take on them. First, some general thoughts and notes on each set: When growing up, I only had 4 of the vintage o-ring O13--Flash, Scarlett, Stalker, and straight-arm Grand Slam. I completed the vintage set only in the last decade, mostly for then and now comparisons. Over the years last few years as I was tweaking my 25th versions, I started playing around with tweaks to the heads of these, as well as painting the belts, and other paint tweaks--retconning these guys a bit based on things I liked on my 25th classic versions. I got all of the comic o-ring O13 produced in 2004 comic style when released--when I first realized that a complete updated O13 was a must-have. That set got also got filled out only in the last few years once I got comfortable with customizing. Lots of part swapping, and hip mods to close the gap between hip piece and upper legs. The desert o-ring set was the last to be done--really just to get a 7th set (a lost 20th Anniversary set), and to keep original (mostly) head sculpts for comparison and reserve. Both comic and desert sets were definitely inspired by versions I'd seen by customizers here and on JoeCustoms. For all the modern versions, I pretty much stuck with the 2007-2009 early 25th anniversary parts. As a result, they lack the added wrist articulation, taller torsos, and bulkier arms/legs. However, to this day I still have a lot of love for the parts used--especially to the 2007 Snake Eyes (with the most bothersome aspect being the overall height of the figure compared to later figures). So I'm hoping that these figures still hold up for others as well. The uniforms and overall look stay squarely on the 1982 styling, akin to the DC Universe Classics and Masters of the Universe Classics. I love the cohesiveness of the original first wave. Plus, many of these characters and specialties don't hold up to true modern takes (maybe a discussion for another time and another thread). The 25th classic green versions are the summation of years of tweaking things I didn't like from original releases--various heads, parts, colors, accesories, figure heights. Main matching DBU colors don't exactly align the originals--I liked the idea of different shades of green and brown for each figure from a toy figure standpoint (but no real life practical sense), and it also makes re-use of parts a bit less obvious. Finally, I had an obsession with re-using the same body/accessory parts as much as tolerable--and a separate obsession with using all different heads, that would be inspired primarily by the Hama comic versions. The 25th comic style versions started out as a lark with a single Grunt custom paint figure. After realizing that Snake Eyes and Scarlett were already out there, I figured that I was technically already half way to a complete set. The 25th desert style versions started with my frustration with the Target UPB tan Steeler, and provided a set to use for testing alternate head sculpts and body parts for the final 25th classic green set. Finally, I included the original 25th versions of all as a set--partly for comparison, but also I realized in retrospect that these originals weren't that bad. Plus, these were the ones that really lit my O13 obsession. Pictures to come will be in the production order of the 25th Anniversary figures, as a last nod to my personal obsession with these figures... |
