O.K. here's the deal, I am very anxious to start customizing, I already have some ideas I want to try but I have no gear. I have been reading several helpful threads regarding what kind of paint and what brands to look for.
Obviously the more colors you have the better, but I am starting on a budget so the question is this; How many colors do I need starting out? how expensive are the acrylics? Any help is very much appreciated, Thanks! |

you need the basic flats... blacks, whites, reds. I buy mine off ebay, pretty good deal and you can pick out colors you want. I buy 10 at a time.

The basics are a good place to start as mentioned. The price isnt generally to high depends on where you go though.

Here is a very good start to colors and things you will need. You will want to buy better paint brushes. The ones that come in this pack are not very good. This is what I bought and have bought a lot from testors. $30.00 is a good start. |

I don't think there is anything beyond the real basic colors that you "need". Obviously it depends on what you're painting... if you're going to paint a ton of Cobra Troops, make sure you get blue. If you're going to paint a ton of Joes, green is probably a good option.
Black is always a good color to have, since it can be used for shading, washes, dirt, etc. Same with brown. Of course, there are several hundred shades of brown to choose from. Depending on what kind of paint you decide to go with, you can always mix your own down the road, provided you have the proper base colors. And here's a hint when mixing - always mix more than you think you'll need, because unless you're literally mixing an entire jar of one color with an entire jar of another, it's going to be almost impossible to mix the same exact color again. And sometimes even when you do mix entire jars, the color will vary from one mix to the next.

I've bought many a paint lot on ebay for $10 - $15 for anywhere from 12 to 25 Citadel paints, which usually sell for more than $3 each.

Not sure I would go with that... they are mostly gloss paints in that set. You should try and work with flat colors, they will give you a better match to production figures.

If I had to limit myself to a basic set of 10 colors, it would be these (all flat):
Black (any flat, but I really like Pactra's "Anti Glare Panel Black") Medium or Dark Grey (I really like Pactra's "Dark Grey") White Medium Red (I really like Pactra's "Insignia Red") Medium Blue (Tamiya's "Flat Blue" is a great match to the cobra blue on the 25th figures) Medium Green Tan or Light Sand (I use Model Master's "Sand" as a base for desert camo) Medium Brown (Model Master's "leather") Olive Drab Steel or Silver (Model Masters or Tamiya) If you have a hobby shop nearby, take a look there and see what you can find. Some places sell a starter pack of basic colors (mostly what is listed above). I sometimes have had trouble finding acrylic paints. There seems to be a lot of enamels, but I had to look harder to find the tamiya, model masters or pactra acrylics. You can also order them online. I've ordered from Tower Hobbies before. You should also get some primer as it will help the paint stick a lot better and help cover dark plastic easier, especially if you plan on painting it a lighter color. I started using Model Masters primer, but switched to Tamiya and have not gone back. I love the stuff...it dries fast and covers well. It is also cheaper by the ounce than Model Masters. Tamiya America Item #87075 | Liquid Surface Primer 40ml Model Masters also makes a good flat and semi gloss sealer you can brush on after your custom is finished. For my 25th and Star Wars customs I use the flat sealer, but for vintage Joe customs, I use the semi-gloss since the original figures had a bit of a shine to them. I have recently started using acrylic paint pens with an ultra-fine tip to do fine detail work that I could never do with a brush. Elmer's make some acrylic paint pens called "Elmer's Painters". They have a lot of colors but only a few of them with the ultra-fine tip (White, black, silver, red, blue, green). They work great, but are sometimes hard to find. I actually think the ultra-fine tip ones may have been discontinued, but they can still be found if you look. I have picked all of mine up from Michaels. Good luck and enjoy the customs.

So do you primer the whole figure from head to toe before you begin painting?
