yellows are like reds man, your gona need a prime, of white or a light gray!, you dont have to use a primer, but white is a crappy color to prime wit, cus it is like the yellow, a light gray would prob be best bet if you have the paint, if not jus get a primer !, an you will have to still do multi coats but jus not as many an it will have a even finish!

Tamiya must be stirred then shaken, surface to be painted must be clean.
There is a trick w/ Tamiya, try this... (because surface is black you should do a light undercoat, for yellow on black I use silver. It will be much easier to apply yellow over silver than black.) Do 1 light coat, don't go over areas twice just keep going even though it looks like sh!t. Let it dry for 30 min. Do exactly that 3-5 times. I used to use Tamiya and did the same custom with it. If you ever want to use better paints go with Testors Model Master or my fav. Games Workshop/Citadel. If you're using an old crappy brush with other colors on it buy a new one, I usually have a designated brush for colors like white, yellow, black, silver etc. EDIT: As for the clumping, Tamiya just does that. It dries too fast, exactly why I don't use it anymore. Try pouring some into a bottle cap & add 2-3 drops of water to thin it out so it won't dry as fast and you can apply thinner coats. But again, go over areas once...keep going.

I'm really surprised that your having a problem with clumping since that yellow is normally a little watery. I wonder if you may have gotten some old stock myself. Also, are you keeping your brush clean as you paint? Since that color does dry fairly quick since it is so thin. As for your base color, it depends on your paint style. If you want to drybrush the yellow then I would first due a few base coats of a yellow XF-3/orange x-6 mix. Probably a 2-1 ratio. Then dry brush your yellow on top of that. If you want to do a "clean cut" paint job then you can do a brown or grey base coat. Depending how light or dark your want your top coat to be. The lighter base coat will give you a lighter top coat. Then the same thing with the brown.

I appreciate all the feed back. Resorted to new Paint,Testor, and no change. Must be my technique. I applied a base coat of white. Gonna let it dry and then give it another go. Hopefully once I get this minor detail worked out I can post some pics. Thanks again, the community on here is really something. I'm lovin it.

I've painted with yellow to make a Cobra de Aco... I just did like 4-5 coats. Same way with regular paint for walls... reds and yellows suck. (I sell paint for a job...)

On the two Acos I did, neither was primed, and both used Testors Model Master Insignia Yellow. The first one had an undercoat of brown, and was a pain. The second one had nothing but the original Sgt. Flash underneath, and it went on fine. Light coat, dry thoroughly, repeat until the yellow is satisfactory.
