Thanks for hosting this contest guys. It was an awesome idea and I hope there is a part two. I loved seeing all of the customs and I'm inspired to create more personal rides.
It was also very cool what you did for the kids. My boy was very excited that he placed. He's looking forward to the trip to Toys R Us as well. To all of the guys that entered. Awesome work and thanks! I'm sure I've learned a few things from each of your previous customs posted here at Hisstank. |

I gotta be honest. I have been asking myself some questions since the winners have been posted.
First, Wow! This outcome is more surprising than last years final four. 2nd, I am honestly bewildered. Given the listed judging criteria, the top 4 don't make sense. *To the winners, nothing personal. It's not your fault. This isn't about you. Judging Criteria - "Customizing skills; technical skills, paint applications and presentation will all be a major factor." That said, Galan's Survival Cat lost to BH'd ATLAS?!? Really?! Tankster didn't place, even though he had the best vehicle paint apps in the contest?!? Lastly, your judging criteria had no bearing on your selections what so ever. The best entries of the entire contest didn't even make the top 4. That's pretty bold if you ask me. Why did you bother posting a judging criteria if you wouldn't adhere to it? What was the point of the contest? I'm full of questions, sorry, I'm just terribly confused.

First, I have to say that I have been looking at your customs for years and you are an amazing customizer. This is not flattery, this is the truth. Your work never fails to impress me. Guys like TTT, Tankster, Willworkfortoys, and yourself, are damn legends. I will gladly discuss the judging criteria openly, there is nothing to hide. For my part, I will be straightforward and candid. For your part, I ask that you keep an open mind and make an effort to understand and accept the information that is presented. Before I discuss the judging criteria, before I even touch the subject, we have to look at the rules of the contest. The rules come first before anything else, because after all, it is the basis under which all contest entries must be submitted. To illustrate this, I will use a ridiculous and exaggerated example, so please bear with me. If the contest rules state that you must make a vehicle that looks very much like an animal, then all valid entries must follow this theme. Let's assume that based on this theme, there are 15 vehicle entries. Out of the 15 entries, 5 of them look nothing like an animal, the contestants did not make a strong effort to follow the theme of the contest. Keep in mind that these might be the most amazing vehicles you have ever seen. I might say "Wow, look at what this guy made, this in incredible", however if they do not really embody the theme of the contest they cannot be considered above other entries that did. Following this example, Right off the bat, we are down to 10 entries that have stayed in theme. Out of these 10, let's say that seven look very much like animals, while the other three slightly resemble an animal. It is at this point, and only at this point, that the judging may now begin according to the criteria set forth. The three that only slightly resemble an animal will naturally be pushed back in terms of placement. Now that I have used this ridiculous example, lets look at the actual contest itself and the rules that are set forth; Quote:
Vehicle category:
Many cartoon, toy and comic book characters have their own special rides. Batman has the Batmobile, Inspector Gadget has his Gadgetmobile, etc. Your challenge, is to choose any character from the Joeverse, hero or villain, U.S. or International (Action Force, Argentina, Brazil, etc) and build or repaint a custom ride for that character. The vehicle should be identifiable with the character, which means that when you see the vehicle, you already have a pretty good idea who it belongs to. These are the actual contest rules and guidelines clearly written. I highlighted the last part because it is a key element of the rules of this contest. All board members that submit their entries, do so first and foremost with these rules in mind. Based on the rules of the contest, these are the entries that made the "Final cut": Rock n Roll Ram Mech Major blood Eyesoar Dusty Dustcat AF Survival cat Voltar Dominator Voltar Violator Beachhead Atlas Headman Spark1 Barbecue Firecat Crystal ball Mesmeron Once the judging began, these are the vehicles that rose to the top of the pile: Dusty Dustcat AF Survival cat Voltar Dominator Beachhead Atlas Headman Spark1 Barbecue Firecat Crystal ball Mesmeron __________ I will return to the subject of the entries in a bit, however first I want to go over the judging criteria. You mentioned customizing skills, however, as we stated from the beginning, this is only one of three factors. Each factor is equally important. Judging: all entries will be judged on the following criteria: Creativity and originality; Is the vehicle unique and original? Was the contestant thinking out of the box? Does the vehicle make sense with the character's specialty? Customizing skills; technical skills, paint applications and presentation will all be a major factor. This is pretty self explanatory. A paint job or design can be approached in an infinite number of ways. Staying in the theme; Vehicle customs should be identifiable with their characters. This goes back to the contest rules. If I saw the vehicle by itself with no figure and had no prior knowledge, would I be able to guess who the vehicle belongs to? Does the vehicle match it's character esthetically? All entries were judged according to these three main points. Something to Keep in mind: Originally, there was only supposed to be a first and second place. After seeing how many incredible vehicles we had, we realized it would have been impossible to choose just two, therefore we made the last minute decision to add a third and fourth place. That's a testament to how many entries we loved. Once the deadline had closed and we had established a solid base of entries, the judging then began. Intellectually It was one of hardest things I have ever had to do. Speaking only for myself, I used a point system. I graded each vehicle on a scale of 1 to 5 on each factor, for a total possible score of 15. If there were two vehicles with the same score, I had to place one above the other according my personal taste, which any judge can and will do. Kneroh, Sho Nuff and myself, did not discuss ANY of the entries until literally the last day. Once we had all made our final selections, it was only at that point that we presented each other with our contest picks and compared notes. With a few exceptions, we all unanimously chose the same vehicles. Regarding the entries that did not make the final cut, I find it in extremely poor taste to discuss why an entry did not win, however in the interest of complete transparency, I will lightly touch upon the subject. Some of the contest entries, while absolutely amazing, either did not really follow the rules of the contest, or did not fully capture the theme of the contest. Some of the vehicles looked like they could belong to any number of characters, or did not match with their characters. Keep in mind that I am talking about some of the most amazing vehicles I have ever seen. I cannot say this enough times, I was floored by just about every entry. You mentioned Tankster by name, so I will address that entry directly. Tankster is a customizing god. His paint apps and designs are on a level that very few can ever hope to achieve. Tankster knows that I worship his customs, I think Kneroh, Sho Nuff and myself have all made it clear how we feel about his paint apps. The Raw sewage was a baddass and very original design. Having said that, if I saw the vehicle by itself and had to guess who it belongs to, there are several Joes that it could belong to. Galen's Survival cat was in my final six. I love everything about this vehicle, and it is the ONLY vehicle in this contest that I want to own, LOL. I strongly considered sending Galen an offer to buy it, but decide that would be in poor taste. I probably couldn't afford it anyway. Even mentioning it now seems tacky. I will say again, I love the AF Tiger force Outback Survival Cat. In the end though, it was edged out of the final four by 1 point. Your Dustcat was also in my final six. It matches Dusty perfectly, and it makes sense for his specialty. I don't have to tell you the paint apps are amazing, you know that. The fact that the back opens up into a bivouac is genius. Again, it came down to 1 point. Now, looking at the vehicles that made the final four. I will say again that we all chose the same vehicles independently, Coincidence? That is one heck of a coincidence. 1. The Headman Spark is extremely original, makes perfect sense considering his occupation. The paint job was absolutely beautiful. It wasn't worn or battle damaged, but it was showroom quality. It had Headman written all over it. 2. The Firecat in my opinion is a perfect representation of this contests theme. There is absolutely no doubt who this Firecat belongs to, it was beautifully executed and well thought out. 3. The Crystal Ball mesmeron was totally out the box, amazing skills, and only lost a few points because it was not as identifiable as the other vehicles. Still, it scored so highly in the other categories that it carried it to third place. 4. Beachhead atlas. Take another look at that paint job and tell me this guy doesn't have some seriously sick skills. The vehicle had Beachhead written all over it, was very original and well thought out. We all loved this entry. Speaking only for myself, It came down to these four, the Dustcat and Survival Cat, for a total of six. I stayed up at night going blind looking at the pictures trying to decide which four I would select and it was no easy task. I know that the other Judges had an equally tough time selecting their top four. For what it's worth, BFJ's Dominator was also a top contender. Now, having gone over the contest rules, the judging criteria, and the entries themselves, I wish to address your statements. Quote:
As I have stated candidly, we did in fact follow the rules and guidelines that were put forth. We followed our judging criteria faithfully and to the letter. Kneroh and Sho Nuff were both strong advocates of observing the rules and spirit of this contest and made sure that we never lost site of the big picture. I must respectfully say that your statement is incorrect. Quote:
On this statement, I must vehemently disagree. The best entries did in fact make the top four. The entries were chosen Unanimously and independently, in accordance with the rules and theme of the contest. I have the deepest respect and admiration for the fairness and objective reasoning shown by both Kneroh and Sho Nuff. Sho Nuff is himself a top shelf customizer, though he is too humble to admit it. Kneroh is a graphic artist and production designer by trade. Me, I'm not anything. I am nothing. I also have the deepest respect and thanks for everyone who honored us by submitting an entry, including yourself Fireflyed. Thank you all so much for putting in your time and energy and making this contest so great!

[b][color=Darkviolet][size=+1]First,
If the contest rules state that you must make a vehicle that looks very much like an animal, then all valid entries must follow this theme. Let's assume that based on this theme, there are 15 vehicle entries. Out of the 15 entries, 5 of them look nothing like an animal, the contestants did not make a strong effort to follow the theme of the contest. This is however until i saw the criterion, and to my surprise, my own entry wasnt even mentioned. Was it because my animal is so far off your own idea of an animal that it wasnt even considered and subjected to the other criterions listed? Was my entry so differently distinct from its driver or its driver is a bad choice since it is non-unique or because I privately consulted what can be a plausible choice was my entry immediately removed and subjected to the said criterion that it wouldnt be worthy? Were other entries like the ones submitted, didnt stand a chance to the other criteria because it didnt stick to the theme? or its just relative, since it depends the eyes and background of the judges? Forgive me but I dont want to sound like a bad loser, its the first time i encountered such type of judgement. Answering the inquiry, I would had expected some sort of spreadsheet showing numbers for each criteria (paint apps, design etc) and rankings of each entry and summed up to reveal a quantitative result...and i would shut up and accept it. Not to brag or anything, i too was invited to several contest judging here locally for other toyline customs (namely bandai and tomy) and its the first time I saw this type of judgement applied to competition entries. Dont get me wrong, im not saying its bad, but it can be done better. The "final cut" system will eliminate entries that exhibit some contest criterion, even without the adherence to the theme. Say paint apps and application can be given a number 1 to 10 just for a rate, even if it sucked to a rating of one for the competition. For me its a much fairer game. Again, an inquiry is an inquiry, the method of judging personally wasnt explicit to the rules posted. unless i understand differently. I liked posting my entry just like any other tanker who did join, since we take pride on our work and effort. it just the judging method can be more clearer and a quantitative approach could have been better to justify the outcome. This for me is my honest suggestion. I thank the organizers for conducting this contest. Cheers! Last edited by danielgogeta; 05-03-2011 at 03:12 PM.. |

Daniel, who said anything about your entry being disqualified? Your entry was never DQ'd. No one was outright Disqualified. As I said, there were some entries that more closely met the theme of the contest, and those are the entries that ended up in the final selection. As far as your entry goes, and your presentation, you should be working for Hasbro.

fireflyed and danielgogeta are two amazing customizers for sure, but i do think the judging was handled properly. all of the winners were superb choices and fit the theme perfectly. in the end it all comes down to the opinion of the judges who held the contest, and i think they chose correctly.
