To me, there are certain characters you don't mess with the costume of. Change them a bit...fine. But go all out changing it entirely...no.
Superman, Batman, Spider-Man...they've all had costume changes before, but in the end they go back to the costumes they're known for. Wonder Woman is no exception. This change is going to create a backlack from the fans and the classic costume she wears will be right back to what it was. Superhero costumes aren't meant to be taken seriously anymore then a lot of their powers. So a woman wears a bathing suit like outfit while fighting...so what? It's not real. It's a comic. And hearing that they're changing her history AGAIN!? Why? It's no wonder comics lose readers. When you invest in a character and the history they have established only to turn around, change their looks, change their histories, and change the basic thing that got people to read the comic, it's a wonder people even read comics anymore. |

She wore pants in the late 60's...and that didn't turn out too well.
She also had her uniform changed for a storyline by Greg Rucka, circa 2004. Plus her mid-90's outfit when Artemis took over "The Mantle of the Wonder Woman" (as DC liked to say, back then).

comcis these days just flat out suck. Im not opposed to modernizing a heroes outfit to something functional (you gotta admit while the one piece is hot it does beg the question flash asked in jlu to wonder woman about where she keeps stuff) but its of little consiquence to me as i have given up on comics cause they cant keep anything straight these days.
let it crash and burn i say...i'll roast marshmellows over the fire of the comic industries remains

While I am not a huge fan of the revamped look, I am sure that (like many costume changes) at some point it will revert back to something more like the original. As another poster mentioned, it created some buzz around the character, which is something that hasn't happened in a while.
As for the change in origin... "The Gods, for reasons of their own but which may have something to with their survival and perhaps the survival of Earth itself, have changed the timeline. In the new timeline, years ago the Gods removed their protection from Paradise Island, and left it vulnerable to attack. And attacked it was. Led by a dark figure, a veritable army descended upon the Island, equipped with weapons that could kill even the Amazons. Outgunned, doomed, Hippolyta gave over her three-year-old daughter to a handful of guardians who spirited her away as Hippolyta led one last desperate battle against the forces that had come to destroy all she had created. In that final battle, she and most of the Amazons were killed, though some managed to escape." Ok, for the record I don't like it. I think it is just a deus ex machina for JMS to get the character to a point where he feels that he can do something with the character. I would have rather have seen them create a new character altogether with this origin if that is what they wanted to do so badly. As a comic fan, one has to wonder if it invalidates her continunity for the past twenty years or like previously, did another heroine step into her role. Having said that.... ... out of all the posters so far... are any of you reading WW? Have you been loyal followers for the past X number of years? I will admit to have been a hot or cold fan since the Byrne run years ago. There has been some good but mostly bad. My point being, if everyone loved WW as she was and enjoyed her so much and is now outraged over these changes... how come her sales have never been all that good? Or are people just upset (or maybe that is too strong a word) that a character they like (but don't really support) is being changed?? I just think much like the whole Spider-Clone saga ... eventually ... fans will get the character that they are used to seeing and the storyline which no one likes / liked will be a blip on the screen. I don't mind a story-centric costume change. They all come back to the "base" outfit eventually.
But everything I've read about her new direction so far just doesn't seem like something I want to read. See you in a few months (or years), WW! |

Wouldn't that go for everything and not just the costume? You can't say "its just a comic" to make light of one thing then make a fuss about something else. Just makes no sense to me. |

I'm just looking at it that if they changed the costume simply because it wasn't realistic, does it really matter that it wasn't? WW's look is iconic to her character. Yes, it's silly, but it is associated with her. Wonder Woman's bathing suit outfit has been apart of her as long as Superman has worn the red and blue tights. Look what happened when they tried changing his appearance a couple times. Wonder Woman had changed before as well is the past I know. It just seems silly to change it after being around so long and I agree with some saying it's being done to get peoples' attention on her again and discuss her. A publicity stunt in a way. |

I'm hearing complaints of change, continuity, and such from many of you.....so does that you mean you are with me on the whole ROC/Ripcord thing??
I do not mind the outfit change....it makes more sense, the origin change infuriates me. At least they did not change her name or race.

Yet...just give it time. nothing can be american in any way and no characters can be white anymore. they all have to change cause being a white american is appearantly evil.
