I was wondering if there were any differences between the First, Second, and Third printings of the IDW Classic G.I. Joe series?
I just received Volumes 1, 2 and 6 from Amazon.com Volume 1 is the Third printing. Volume 2 is the Second printing. Volume 6 is the First printing. I was wondering if I should send Volumes 1 & 2 back and just pick up the First printings at Barnes & Noble? I bought the First printings of Volumes 3, 4, & 5 from Barnes & Noble last week because they weren't available directly from Amazon.com until recently again. I paid full price for them, but I would have saved $25 if I were to order them from Amazon right now. I would even save $17 if I ordered them from Barnes & Noble online because they are now back in stock. I'm just worried that I will end up with Second or Third printings if I do that. I decided to buy these three volumes at the Barnes & Noble stores when they were going for outrageous prices on Ebay and such, but now they are showing up again in stock at online retailers for cover price or below cover price. I was also thinking about going back to Barnes & Noble to see which printings they have for Volumes 1 & 2 and then seeing if the barcodes match. that way I can switch them with the ones I ordered from them online. The only problem with this is that the condition of the books in the stores are sometimes not to my liking due to the fact that people have creased them by thumbing through the pages. The copies of Volumes 3 & 4 that I picked up in the store have creases on the back and front covers. I would really like to have First printings for each volume so I'm not sure what I should do.

If you're asking about content, no there isn't a difference as far as I know.
I don't know if 1st editions will be "more valuable" than later editions in the future, if that's what you're asking. These are already second-degree reprints (don't forget Marvel's TPBs from a few years ago), so they probably won't have much value in the speculator's market. Still, you know what they say about suckers being born one a minute... I'm sure somebody on eBay has already made a profit from selling a "rare" IDW first print of their reprint volumes |

I checked my Marvel volumes 1 through 5 and they are all 1st printings.
I think that this makes me want 1st printings for all of the IDW volumes as well. Honestly besides value is it really that important?

Trades dont go up in value. Unless it is a very limited print run or all original work. So 1st , 2nd , 100th printing shouldnt matter.

Well just to give you an update I returned Volumes 3, 4, & 5 to Barnes & Noble and got my $65 back. These were all 1st printings.
Today I got Volumes 4 & 5 in the mail which I ordered from Barnes & Noble online. I paid only $46 for Volumes 3, 4, & 5 from them. The Volumes 4 & 5 that I received were the 2nd printings though. I'm still waiting on Volume 3 which should arrive shortly. I'm actually hoping that it's the 2nd printing as well. I was all confused about the printings because I wanted them all to be the same, but after saving almost $20 I can't really complain. It's like getting one book for free. I really don't mind the 2nd printings of Volumes 1,2,3,4, & 5 because I have 1st printings of the Marvel volumes. I would like 1st printings of IDW Volumes 6 and on though. By the way does anyone happen to own the 2nd printing of Volume 2? The one that I received from Amazon.com is skinnier than the other volumes even though it has the same number of pages. I found this very weird.

Ok here is another update.
I finally got Volume 3 from Barnes and Noble online and it was the 2nd printing. So now I have the 3rd printing of Volume 1, the 2nd printing of Volumes 2,3,4, & 5, and the 1st printing of Volume 6. I'm still looking to see if I can get the 2nd printing of Volume 1 at one of my local Barnes and Noble locations. By the way I'm still looking for some information on Volume 2. I got the 2nd printing from Amazon.com, but it's thiner than the rest of the volumes even though it has the same number of pages. I wonder if they printed it on a different paper stock than the others?

A 2nd printing doesn't mean 2nd edition, which might entail corrections. For instance, Vol 7 has a lot of script errors, so a 2nd or 3rd printing would still have those errors, but they could be corrected in subsequent editions.
Not sure if this answers your question about differences. |

Just checked my copy of vol.2 (from the first print run) and it's the same thickness as the other volumes I have (all of which are first prints). It could be, as you surmised, a difference in the paper stock used for subsequent printings. Is it noticeably slimmer? Or is it a difference that only becomes apparent when you "squeeze" the book into a shelf space?

In fact I first thought that there were pages missing, but they all seem to be there. I think that I'm going to go back to Barnes and Noble and see if I can swap it out for another copy.
