What are the major differences in the story of Conan from the movies vs pulp and how did his general look change. I imagine once the movies got big that his Marvel appearance was heavily influenced by the movie look.
Actually, Marvel stayed pretty true to the look of the book character through out its run and for Savage Sword, as well. Conan is described as a bronzed Giant most commonly (the note here being that his skin is not naturally dark, but tanned by the sun), and has black hair (a square cut mane, specifically, which is something even I don't tend to recreate in my customs) and smoldering blue eyes. The fictional Cimmeria that he's from appears to be more ethnically comparable to the Celts (some sources will claim Conan is supposed to invoke American Indian/Native American ethnicity, but this is false, and probably attributable to Frank Frazetta's artwork).
As much as I love the movie, I think what's lost in a lot of the multimedia is the "stranger in a strange land" component. The core of Conan's character is that he wants to see what's beyond Cimmeria and wanders into the "civilized" world. Despite his prowess as a warrior, Conan is not portrayed as an intellectually limited brute, which is probably his most common media representation.
Arnie's movie and Momoa's, as well, really harped on this revenge driven Conan, which is made dumber by the fact that most of the "civilized" world stayed away from Cimmeria because it was largely considered unconquerable (yet we have two movies where the Cimmerians are whole-sale slaughtered in 15 minutes). A lot of Conan stories play more like James Bond, where he finds himself in a situation, not generally of his own making, and is pulled into events by others or is an interloper that must be accounted for along the way. In many cases, Conan is not necessarily driving the plot of the story, but heavily influences its outcome, if that makes sense. Not exclusively, but commonly. I actually don't think either movie does a bad job of capturing the personality of Conan, but it's largely overshadowed by his revenge driven brooding. Howard's Conan was a man of "gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth", so I guess its in part to a given reader to decide what is and what isn't Conan-like. A much more knowledgeable Howardian has noted about the movies that many of Conan's actions, depending on your interpretation, may be perceived to be nothing like Conan, or very much like him.
Now, the very low budget show, Conan the Adventurer, which was produced after the success of Hercules and Xena, but somehow with even less production value, is actually a nice representation of the character, despite Ralf Moeller's limited acting chops, at least at the time, and if you can ignore the fact that the budget didn't allow for even some black hair dye (Moeller had the blue eyes already). But it also fails to properly represent Cimmeria.
I know you don't care, but since you gave me a whole, I ran through it. But a bump is a bump.
