GI Joe Ark Style Book Officially Announced

GI-Joe-MARS-Industry-Submarine
Looks like we're in for more than just toys and a movie this year, which is the true GI Joe A Real American Hero 30th anniversary! Jim Sorenson, whose Transformers Animated Allspark Almanac Volume 2 had a surprising amount of GI Joe A Real American Hero references, has officially announced(on his blog) that he will be writing an Ark-style book for GI Joe! So what's in an Ark-style book? Tons of Sunbow animation model sheets, and more(and he may have some sneak peeks at Roll Out Roll Call 2012)! Here's what Sorenson had to say:

It's going to be pretty spectacular. For some reason I've been able to find WAY more material than I have for Transformers. As the illustration to the right jokingly illustrates, I'm going to be taking a few thousand model sheets and condensing the very best and most interesting of them down into one volume of a few hundred pages. I'm really stoked at my first work in this new and glorious arena. I've come across some amazingly cool rare stuff, plus most of what you'd expect for a book about the Sunbow animation models. I'm still looking for more material, too, so if you're a collector of such things drop me a line. I'm especially interested in material from the movie and the commercials beyond, as well as incidental characters.

While sifting through model sheets, Sorenson came across a model sheet for an unused MARS Industries sub, similar to one the Seacons used in a Transformers G1 commercial. We've attached the image here, and here's how he describes it:

While putting together the Joe book, I cam across a very similar model, an early unused version of a Cobra submarine. (The actual model was revised a bit, most prominently to include a giant cobra head painted on the front of the sub, and will almost certainly be in the Joe model book.) Sure enough, the Seacons were menacing a sub from the same class of vessels that Cobra uses, seen here. I think it's kind of neat to uncover yet another connection between the Joe-verse and Transformers-verse.

Whether you're a fan artist hungry for GI Joe references or a fan who appreciates having a guide full of resourceful ARAH design material, this book will have a wealth of information that all fans can appreciate!

Jettfire:
Sold.

Great idea for a book.
USAgent:
that could be pretty slick
red4:
That submarine looks like it has more articulation than [insert line here].
Shin Densetsu:
I never thought we would see a book like this, so this is a definite buy for me!
07GT500 COBRA:
By model they mean the submarine was intended to be used in the cartoon? How cool would a 1:18 sub have been?
Clobbertron:
I will purchase this no matter the cost. I'm positive the content will be top notch.
eddy-arashikage:
I am pretty sure it was in the animated gi joe from sunbow

Me too. Eddy. This submarine appeared in the Sunbow cartoon for sure.
Nemesis*Prime:
So where can I pre-order this?

Looking forward to reading it.
t34bag:
PLEASE be hard cover, paper back never lasts.
sharky:
Definitely need to pick this up.
Cobra Terrorist:
Cool.
Raw Dog:
I will most likely get this book. I would also love a book of card and box art spanning the life of Joe, with special attention paid to ARAH.
MJjoe4life:
Looking forward to this. This is going to be cool!
ndb:
Yes sir! I shall be picking this up!
jaimanstone:
Excellent!
Gyre-Viper:
Jim is a fantastic guy and I guarantee you will want this book.
This is a must buy.

Doubtful, the Transformers Ark books were all paperback. Those books are huge BTW, think of a phonebook full of Transformers G1 animation model sheets but bigger/wider and on higher quality paper. Since Sorenson has way more material available for GI Joe than Transformers, this is going to be a must have for any Sunbow fan.

Heh speaking of which I've got an idea for him.

I'd love to hear it, Shin Densetsu.

Thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm. I approached this, my first real non-Transformers project, with some trepidation. It was misplaced--Joe fans are an amazingly friendly, helpful, resourceful bunch, and it's thanks to you collectively that this book will probably eclipse The Ark books in quality.

That would be one hell of a book but even more of a challenge to pull off.
This is something people have been clamoring for... for quite some time.
But it involves a hell of a lot more than scanning some images. This would literally be a blood, sweat, and tears project I'm sure. That would be the kind of book you put together, get published, and then go on vacation after completing and probably never want to look at GI JOE again after said completion. HAHAHA.

im sold. any news on preorder info?

If you make it, they will come...At least I know I certainly would!

As for Jim's book, I am super stoked for this and will definitely pick it up.
CrimsonGuard101:
I so want that sub...reminds me so much of the ships and things from Star Blazers lol...they need to make a bunch of micromachine or larger then micro machine sized replcias of all the cool cobra heavy craft that were in the series!
Lt. Faceless:
SOLD!!! i'll take 2.1 to keep safe and one to read/look at 100000 times and wear it out.

Welcome to the Tank Jim!!! Can't wait for the book!!
alcoholic ewok:
it'd be cool if there was a way to use the Kindle mini e-books to periodically release the additional images that weren't used in the book.
Ash Talon:
Looks cool. I'll definitely pick one up.

I think a book exploring the design work of the toys would be cool as well. From early sketches to finished product. And stuff that never was. Just to get an insight into what went into the line. Could be educational for how a toyline operates which would probably be helpful to many fans online and might bring perspective to the decisions facing the toy designers.

cosign!
orezona:
How long does a project like this take?

I wonder if Santa will be able to bring me one this year?

Definitely interested in this. It looks like it will be very cool and be a welcome addition to the other publications that are G.I. Joe related.
GI Joe Eternal:
Sold!!

Welcome, Jim.
Steel Brigade:
Must buy! Yo joe!!
Gothiczartan:
If there is going to be a book that shows the concept and model sheets that are for the cartoon series and it would be good idea if they have the sunbow stuff. if I want to learn more about this please message me and we can talk about this.
Gothiczartan:
if there was a tranformers stuff similar like gi joe you put up, I'm not getting into that the transformers. it's not because i'm not interested in them, I just didn't have time for them. I focus on gi joe and star wars some of the 3 3/4" action figures (depends which ones are my favorite). thank you for sharing this. looking forward for something about a model book
Sniper Viper:
That sub is cool to see.
Steevy Maximus:
I got the Ark II book earlier this year, and I loved it. Enough I'll probably get the first Ark if I can scrounge up some extra money.

I'm quite excited to see a similar product for Joe, especially if it features material from the later Sunbow cartoons (after the series ended)
Gothiczartan:
So when does this book go on sale?
knoxvelour:
take my money!
Tree-Bot:
HOLY COW at last ROLL OUT ROLL CALL Transformers & GI-Joe 2012 UK Convention | All The Cool Stuff finally gets a mention on HISS Tank front page - sorta ;)

It's really exciting to have both Jim and Bill come to Roll Out Roll Call 3 and hopefully there will be some snipets they can both share.

With respect to the wait until this comes out, there are a few books books which I would reccommend picking up, the first two of which compliement this current Joe project:

Amazon.com: Complete Transformers Ark (9781600104886): Jim Sorenson, Bill Forster: Books

Amazon.com: Transformers: The Ark Volume 2 (v. 2) (9781600101809): Jim Sorenson, Bill Forster: Books

Amazon.com: Transformers Animated: The Allspark Almanac (9781600104879): Jim Sorenson, Bill Forster: Books

Amazon.com: Transformers Animated: The Allspark Almanac, Vol. 2 (9781600106835): Jim Sorenson, Bill Forster: Books

Jim and Bill also created their own Joe tongue in cheek filecards too, check them out:

Jim Sorenson | All The Cool Stuff

Bill Forster | All The Cool Stuff

Now if I could somehow find some of the animation models used for Action Force to include.....

All the best,
Dave

Gyre-Viper:

Gyre-Viper:
WIN THIS BOOK

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...k-contest.html

The contest will be judged by Jim Sorenson himself!!!!
Crimson Rage:
Absolutely and utterly sold on this. Loved the TF versions and a GI Joe edition would be a perfect companion to them on my shelf.
I would have prefered the TF books to have some colour pages, but I appreciate why they didn't.
