Pretty cool images. They have more color than I would have predicted.
silverjunkee:
Design-wise, looks very "tradeshow-awkward" to me (which makes sense, of course); like a bunch of individual shots very quickly composited together without a lot of thought put to it. Still, always cool to see new images. The Scarlett pose is pretty old-school w/the crossbow. Neat. Storm Shadow looks good too.
Prince of Fire & Thunder:
This version of GI Joe has a strong Sigma Six feel to me. Which makes sense considering what the Joe property was when it was being planned.
topnotch97:
they should do something on Scarlett's hair.... i like the early pics better than the wavy one right now.

and i love the Baroness pics... ah.... those glasses... megane
spazzy:
I am loving all these previews, I am stoked for this movie, I could care less what they do to it....IT's G I Joe!!!
TheLongestDay:
Storm Shadow looks badass-like hes ready to cut a neck or two.
kbfett:
The Baroness's (that's alot of S's) guns look like cordless drills to me but other than that it looks great!
QBERT:
super-cheesy (but then again so werent' the 80's cartoons). The Storm Shadow pic looks the worst. It's like he's thinking "what should I do for this next shot", totally out of place.

SNAKE-EYES doing windmills in the "pyramid of darnkess" series on stage at the SNAKE Pit nightclub = classic!

Cant wait....hope i don't hype myself up to much and end up getting disappointed.
cocoabononohead:
I smell a flop!
dogtears:
Storm shadow looks like one of the ninjas from those 80s ninja movies like revenge of the ninja or ninja domination...which would be cool like back in the 80s..hopefully SS can make ninjas come back in 2k9
Kamakura_Hawaii:
I'm so sad. Storm Shadow FINALLY makes it to a live-action property and he's going to look like THAT?! Crap.

Well, at least Snake-Eyes looks cool. [Even though his visor looks crooked in that picture.]

For months I've been arguing on Internet Movie Database (IMDB) dot com that this movie isn't up to my standards because it will NOT match most of the facts of the source material. Even cool images like these don't change my mind. If I never read the comic books (or saw the cartoons or collected the toys), MAYBE I'd be cool with this movie.

Alas, with all I know about the source material, the more I learn about this movie, the angrier I get.

Facts . . . . for a fictional universe. That's rich.

A fictional universe with fictional characters who already inhabit several alternate storylines - 80s cartoon, Marvel comics, DDP comics, IDW Transformers crossover, toy line filecards, Sigma 6, Joe vs. Cobra, new IDW comics, upcoming Resolute, & upcoming movie. There are already so many different sources I can't see where the one true version is in any place other than the individual's imagination.

I TOTALLY agree
crock master:
my mom just sent me an e-mail stating that she found my 1984 g i joe club poster!! i am so excited.
Kamakura_Hawaii:
Is that the prevalent attitude around here?

"Slap the G.I.Joe logo on a turd & I'll buy it"?

I expect more from G.I.Joe than that.

Let's face it. They took elements from the Marvel comic books that Larry Hama wrote but went half-a** with it.

Snake-Eyes & Storm Shadow met as kids?! Snake-Eyes was just trying to steal food? Storm Shadow just kept beating him in fights? No Vietnam? No war buddies? Ripcord hitting on Scarlett?

If the fans have a "whatever" attitude, then the filmmakers will keep having one, too. Who cares? Movie-goers will keep shelling out the cash. It doesn't matter.

It's weird how the people making the 25th anniversary / nostalgic line of toys get it but the people making the big budget Hollywood movie don't.

P.S. The DDP comic book continuity is reportedly the SAME as the Marvel one, picking up where it left off. They can't be counted as "2" continuities.

the fact that you have to reduce peoples differing opinion as liking crap if it has the Joe logo on it reveals a serious lack of reason in your argument. it is possible that some people like the changes and are exhibiting the same discernment in deciding that they do as you have in deciding that you do not. if that is the case, how would that be them liking crap, which would be dependent on their own view of the idea being crap but not caring because it is G.I. Joe? you're going to have to account for that flaw in your position if you want to pass it off as reasonable. if not, it is just another whiny rant in a sea of millions of them.
Kamakura_Hawaii:
Okay, I'll bite.

Sure, my previous post may come off as a rant. I'll acknowledge that. Granted.

I guess I failed to state that it is my opinion that, for this first film, G.I.Joe (the property or - should I say, Hasbro - the owner of the property) should put its best foot forward.

I acknowledge it is my opinion that a more faithful translation of the Marvel Joe comics would become its best foot foward.

Why do we need this? Why does anyone need this? For the hundreds if not thousands or millions of potential G.I.Joe fans out there, this movie will be their first exposure to the world of G.I.Joe. If they are exposed to the best it has to offer, aren't the chances of them actually becoming fans that much better?

And WHY do I think the Marvel comic books (and later the Devil's Due ones) constitute the best the Joe world has to offer? They laid out the lives & histories & relationships of characters we learned to care about. Sure, the cartoons were fun. But weren't they meant to be superficial?

The comic books delved into Snake-Eyes' past. How it related to Storm Shadow. It told of WHY Storm Shadow joined Cobra in the first place. The comic books went so far as to detail their experiences in Vietnam.

I think weaving their lives through one of U.S. history's toughest times is significant. Why candy coat this? Why re-write it? Why lose it altogether?

So many dimensions are lost when they simplify the story the way they did. [If the screenplay floating around was any indication.]

Are the screenwriters baby-ing us? Do they think we can't take a story about Vietnam?

Will I appreciate Snake-Eyes' & Storm Shadow's friendship less if they didn't go through a war together (at least one tour), didn't see mutual friends (or, at least, fellow soldiers) die? Yes, I will. I don't care as much if all that happened between them was that Snake-Eyes was a poor (French?) kid wandering around Japan (even though Storm Shadow is now Korean, WTF?) and he tried to steal some of Storm Shadow's family's food. So what? Not much of a history there.

I won't even bother getting into the murder mystery of Storm Shadow's uncle. [Although, at least, they bothered to retain that much from the comic books.]

What's my point? I think the fans-yet-to-be are being cheated of the best G.I.Joe has to offer. Sommers and his people are candy-coating & over-simplifying things. If they had to set this movie in the 80s (and flash back to the late 60s or early 70s) to tell their story, then so be it!

Why modernize everything? Will it make it that much cooler? Will the fans overlook the substance and revel in the shiny action going on?

I say: Make a film that captures the essence of what G.I.Joe is about. Don't water it down & trivialize everything by modernizing it. Put Joe's best foot forward. Otherwise, the movie-making powers-that-be are just cheating us.

You would be one of... well, one...

...to get too hyped up, that is. The disappointment... well, we'll all feel that..

I have no doubt you mean what you say. All the same, I don't think this is the true reason why you & so many other loyal fans who have stuck with GI Joe through the years want the Marvel version. I think it's more akin to that old pair of jeans or shoes or whatever you continue to wear well after they've worn out. Comfort, familiarity, something you link with your very own identity. Not saying the story isn't worthy of big screen live action. I wouldn't know - if it didn't come with a pair of 25th action figures, I haven't read it. But very few of the people who see the upcoming movie will have read them either.

Well, it was meant to make boys want to buy toys. That's pretty much it, so yeah. It worked damn well too.

Because it would have to be an alternate history, which would alienate much of the target audience. The target audience isn't just the fans of the comics (many of which would still gripe about deviations from the comics). The target is as many action flick fans as possible. Narrow target audience means smaller sales means smaller budget means probably not being able to afford Rattlers & HISS tanks (among other things). An alternative might have been changing Vietnam to the Gulf War but then what happens to the ninjas? Where are the Middle Eastern characters you would expect?

Also, if you don't try something new, you stagnate & die. Take Star Wars. If all there ever was was the original trilogy, there'd still be the loyal fans but the property would essentially be dead. Love or hate episodes I-III, they at least kept things alive & even resparked fandom in many oldskoolerz for IV-VI. How many people here hate I-III, love IV-VI, & restarted their collections since hearing the first buzzes of The Phantom Menace? Bet it's a lot.

And frankly it takes just as much work to recreate as it does to start anew. So why not?

You gots two-hours. You want to make a movie about a flamboyant terrorist organization with cutting-edge sci-fi technology & the heroes who thwart them. You also want to appeal to a global audience ($$$). Sounds like a formula for an action flick to me. That being the case, how much time in an action flick should you dedicate to action? How much time should you dedicate to the complex lives of the characters? Maybe you'd prefer a penetrating, gripping tragic drama with a couple kick-ass fight scenes thrown in & have it set within a compelling sci-fi environment. Know what? I'd like that too. Hell, I'd looove it! But how well does that sell? Who's the target audience? How much money will it generate? What kind of budget does that justify? And most importantly, how will you convince the producers? (I think it'd sell phenomenally well, but I'd like to see someone convince a producer of this. They haven't forgotten Waterworld.)

Probably not. You grew up reading the Marvel run.

Uh no - the actor is Korean. Various asian actors play ethnicities other than their own all the time. So do caucasian actors.

Not much of a history there.
Again, action flick with limited storytelling time.

And I say the screenplay is promising enough it could deliver this.

I don't see how modernizing waters down or trivializes anything. If anything it makes the property more relevant & more easily accessible to a large audience.

I appreciate this post. It finally allows an opportunity for real conversation.
Lifeline:
Kamakura... You are so totally right. You really nailed what has been bugging me about this movie.
