Trace on 3D, then draw on top of it by rendering at 2D.
I know Cal and he does an impressive work, but he's doing a full issue, pencil and inks. There's no way an artist (alone) can do pencil and inks with that amount of detail, so there comes the help. 3D rendering is also pretty useful for weapons, vehicles and equipment, i've used it before.
It's a lot more valid than having another artist do backgrounds and vehicles... like most other artists do.

It's great for reference but excruciating when you see someone tracing it. The main issue with tracing 3D, is you're trying to make something appear realistic with minimal work, while sacrificing real world physics that the program doesn't automatically hand feed you.
Then there's the issue that there really is no unique style being applied here. It looks just like that UE book only with a different artist name. Why even have a style if it can be copied by anyone with little technical skill if all they have to do is download a bunch of freeware and set a few presets?

People have said my comic isn't a "real" comic because I photograph action figures, so I guess I'm not surprised to see complaints about a non traditional format. But I'm open minded, I don't care what medium an artist uses as long as it looks good in the end. The people and the environments look realistic in these pages and that's enough for me. I'll pick up the TPB when I can.
