I liked the DDP quite a bit, as well. Kind of sad it was non canonized.

Why did I give up on GI Joe? I haven't, but am close to it. Nobody would think Zarana & Zandar are twins in ARAH at this point, as they're certainly being portrayed in a way it would need to be stated outright for anyone to believe it. If this is intentional, it breaks my heart, because that is never, ever going to happen.

I keep coming back and dropping out. The art never improves. I don't get it with modern comics, but it seems that they lost touch with their own media. It's either a full page of text with exposition, or a full page of storyboard, with not even SOUND! It's like the artist gets confused, "is it a book or a movie?", just stupid.
Composition sucks, continuity sucks, it's such an amateurish level of work that you can't believe people are getting paid to do it. Just saw a few pages of Sierra Muerte, and it's pure garbage. It's not style, they will tell you it's style, but it's garbage. God, I miss Ron Wagner.

I haven't given up per say, but I do jump back and forth on the IDW universe stuff. I'll read it for a bit, then stop, then pick it up, then stop. As others have said the constant reboot/restart/renumbering with different creative teams really push me off. The art on the Sitterson and Allor runs are honestly too bland/plain for me....they have no depth to them...they look like the artists cut out colored paper and arranged them into the shape of the characters and backgrounds...they don't look like they re supposed to be "real", if that makes sense.
As far as ARAH goes, I did stop for a bit(due to a lack of discretionary funds for a time)but picked back up when I was able to. While the book may not be the best written thing ever, it does remind me of the original run in the 80s and my childhood. THAT is why I will continue to read it until it stops....a welcome distraction from the real work and real life problems. Let it be hokey and weird....I like it. |

I would *love* to see Ron Wagner (and a great inker) return for a run on ARAH. While I enjoy Netho Diaz considerably, I also miss the 80's style of comics. Rod Whigham and his inker, Andy Mushinsky, were what drew me to comics in the first place. I follow @rackspinner on Twitter and enjoy seeing all of those great covers from the 70's and 80's that they post throughout the week.

I enjoyed the Devil's Due run. IMHO there hasn't been a better run since that storyline ended.
I was not a regular reader of the IDW comics, but whenever I would check in, it was generally incoherent trash. Like at one point they had Scarlett getting into a romantic love rectangle with freaking Mainframe, Duke, and Snake-Eyes. That's when I really wanted to throw it into the trash. The Sitterson run looked even worse. I've never gone back and re-read the Blaylock/Jerwa DD run, but I remember it being good at the time. It felt lock step like direct sequel to the original Marvel series. There were certainly bumps along the way and some pacing issues, but all the characters generally felt in character to me. I think the main flaw of the Devil's Due run is they didn't know what to do as well when the focus wasn't on Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow drama. Other than that, I thought the plots worked. The team had been decommissioned and had gone their separate ways for some years. Then they are gradually brought back together. It felt like the natural progression from where the original Marvel run ended in the 1990s. I thought the Reloaded series had potential, but it quickly lost steam and got cancelled after like one year. Making Duke a villain was stupid. Maybe make us think he's a villain for a while but don't actually make him the villain Scarlett kills. |

Ugh, that was one of the breaking points for me as well. I loved MainFrame in the Marvel comic, but the IDW version was terrible. It was like the writer wanted to vicariously live the loser landing the alpha chick.

I struggle to care about comic books nowadays. So many of them are just pages of disconnected nonsense that don't actually add up to anything. I expect a story to be heading towards a point that means something. Even GI Joe suffers from this. They just keep going around in circles with the same couple of plot points.

Most Joe comics I see nowadays just have a few panels of the characters jumping around striking athletic poses. I'm like, "Where are they? What is each character doing? Why aren't they seeking cover? Does any of this matter?" And the answer is, "No." It's just a splash page of some action poses with no rhyme or reason. Quote:

There's a scene in the old school ARAH (#31) where Destro, Firefly, and Fred are sneaking up on Snake Eyes' cabin. They go through this whole thing where they are trying to maneuver around the cabin. I always like this issue because it actually MATTERS where each person is and what they are doing. The story hinges on understanding where each character is in relation to the environment and the other characters. Quote
That was a great issue. Snake Eyes was shown to be a superior soldier but not so omnipotent that he didn't need the help of Airborne and Spirit in battling his enemies. |

I'm out of the US a lot and don't have the time, funds, or mental energy to keep track of all the iterations of G.I. Joe that have come and gone in the past decade. Some of the stuff you guys have mentioned, I have no clue what it is.
I did pick up a few of the various titles in the early IDW days, but none of them grabbed my attention, because, really, all I wanted was for Hama to pick up where he left off. So I was ecstatic when IDW actually did that. My M.O. for Hama-verse has been to order all the mags online, and then read the past few years' worth of issues when I get back Stateside (I know, I'm a dinosaur, there are digital options, blah, blah... ;) ), but I haven't avoided spoilers over the years, so I basically know what's happening. All that being said, I've recently re-read 155.5 - 272, and there's definitely some good, bad, and ugly stuff in there. I will say, I detest the blue ninjas and the brainwave scanner/Dr. Venom, and the invade The Pit/attach Springfield seesaw is so mega-stale. I think the "Dawn of the Arashikage" arc was well done, but killing Snake Eyes was not handled well at all -- especially Sean Collins having his face burned off, losing his voice, and wearing a rubber mask and hanging out with Scarlett thing (the last one being kinda... odd... ). No George Lucas "It's like poetry; it rhymes" for me, thank you very much. I found that I really enjoy the plot lines that don't focus on Cobra as the enemy. They seem to have a bit more character development and create a better story that the over simplified Joe vs. Cobra cartooniness. So, I continue on, loyal to Hama despite the (many) rehashes for the sake of seeing where his continuity goes, the good stories that pop up on occasion, completism, and, yes, enjoyment, overall. And sorry, dudes, I'm really bad at brevity so: TLDR: I only read the Hama series and like some of the plot lines, even if most of it is a combo really bad, lazy rehashes and having no grasp/awareness of continuity.
