Fun article. I like how you don't try to pick out the absurd elements and present it as a "cartoon".
I like the point about diversity. In the mid-80's, my favorite TV shows were "GI Joe", "Smurfs" and "Hill Street Blues" (watched it with my folks). One thing I always liked about all of them were their diverse, ensemble casts. I remember noticing similarities across all three. For example: Dusty --> Clumsy Smurf --> Renko. All were essentially the "country bumpkin" character. Mutt was very similar to HSB's Mick, etc. One thing that popped up in the "comments" of your article was Roadblock's cartoon rhyming being inspired by Muhammed Ali. As a kid, I thought this was true... but as I got older, I wondered if the rhyming was, instead, inspired by Dolemite! I could see the production crew going with that, then when called on it, they'd say: "errr, uh, yeah.. he's like Ali"!

The action in the cartoon was so insane it could give Cameron and Tarantino a run for their money. Just look at "Cobra Quake," where they end up fighting each other with wooden marionettes at one point. Lot of stuff like that that's so original and crazy it could've ended up in Kill Bill and people would still be amazed by it.
I also loved some of the sly political references that had a decidedly conservative slant. Like when Zartan protests to Gung-Ho, "What about my human rights?" and Gung-Ho proceeds with his "enhanced interrogation." Then there were some episodes like the Synthoid Conspiracy with Cobras disguised as U.S. citizens spewing traditional leftist anti-military tropes as a justification for dismantling G.I. Joe, e.g. them claiming that G.I. Joe provokes the enemy to attack simply by existing. I like that the cartoon didn't feature too many cliches or stereotypes since those are boring. I couldn't care less if all the characters were white or black or something else. "Diversity" when used to describe race is meaningless to me because like MLK said we should be, I'm color blind towards race and don't consider it a factor at all in evaluating a person or a character. The article was awesome and right on the money, you're right the action never seemed repetitive and a hearty mention to the background music, there was distinctive music for action scenes, scenes with Cobra, scenes with G.I.Joe and even goofy music for oddball characters like Bazooka and/or Dreadnoks.

What I loved about the series were the racial barriers it broke. Most shows back then had the "one" black or asian character. They usually were heavily stereotyped as well.
Except for Roadblock (the toon version not the comic) all the characters had their own personalities and style. I can remember now playing with Doc, Quick Kick, Alpine to name a few and loving it. |

Wow. Nearly two years after I wrote and posted it, my article on the 4 Things the GI Joe Cartoon Did Right was commented on by none other than Buzz Dixon, the story editor of the show! Check it out!

So, just a quick update on the GI Joe article I wrote. A little while ago, my article was inundated with comments from a troll. He was ridiculously mean to me and everyone who wrote a comment (and was roundly ignored), but his main point was, well, let him explain:
Troll: "The DIC episodes did not suck and we deserve the right to see them again online." What do you guys think? I know that different people like different incarnations of GI Joe, but I don't think I've ever met anyone that was a fan of the DIC stuff. Do people that like the DIC episodes actually exist, or is this person just messing with me? I'm seriously asking for curiosity sake.

DIC was huge step down from Sunbow but it is still an enjoyable watch. It is also the only way to see any of the post 87 characters animated.

There's a lot of goofy nonsense in there that can make it painful to watch, but there's also parts that I think are surprisingly smart.
Quote:
The best example of weirdness in GI Joe is pretty much any episode that features Shipwreck.
Quote:
The way I heard it, Hasbro (the makers of the toys) would give a list to the Sunbow writers of which characters and vehicles to use in each episode.

I don't think they were ever so limited as to what characters they had to feature in a specific episode. It was more like being told each year that you had to introduce all the new year's characters in the introductory series, and then try to use them more often than the old ones throughout the season.
Quote:
Spirit was probably the one character who was an ethnic stereotype, and Wild Bill to an extent. Quick Kick was probably the least ethnically stereotypical. Hama did something similar with Budo on his file card, making him way more Americanized than anyone else would've looking at that figure. |
