You guys bring up some excellent points. The voice actors brought SO much to the show, and I probably should have given them some props in the article. The fact that it doesn't talk down to kids is another good point. There are moments in the show that I did not catch as a kid, but enjoy so much more today.
GI Joe can be enjoyed without politics getting involved. For the cartoon, you just have to acknowledge the era that it was made in -- especially in arguments with detractors. Trigue - PLEASE do a breakdown of how much GI Joe would have cost the taxpayers. That would be amazing!!

First Sunblow your article was excellent. I agree with everything you said. Second, this is the kind of post I enjoy reading everyone who has replied so far has added positive comments, and I agree with them all.
The voice actors actually took G.I. Joe seriously, and they did not patronize kids by trying to sound like dumbed down adults. I hate when cartoons do that. It was what made most of the DIC toons hard to watch, and especially listen to. Yeah some of the stories were goofy, but some actually had emotional impacts that moved you then, and still do today. When my son first watched There's No Place Like Springfield part 2 when he was about 4, he actually cried at the end when Shipwreck lost his synthoid family. :( He still loves to watch Once Upon A Joe, and laughs his butt off everytime he watches it. I tried to get him to watch Renegades, and he just had no interest in it. However, he loves the new TMNT cartoon. Why? because like classic Sunbow G.I. Joe, it has the perfect blend of goofy with realism. That seems to be an art form that far too many modern cartoons just don't have. If Hasbro ever wants to grab kids with a G.I. Joe cartoon again and have it be a run away hit they need to draw on all the great points of the classic Sunbow series. Such as: 1. great animation 2. top notch voice actors who take it seriously( Renegades did a great job with this aspect ) 3. A diverse selection of Joes and Cobras; not just 5 or 6 characters every episode. I love Snake Eyes, but I was glad he was not overdone in the cartoon. 4. healthy blend between realism and fantasy 5. Don't patronize kids, but don't go too violent either. Keep it rated PG( like Star Wars Clone Wars ). 6. Make it timeless! Don't include too many references to current events such as celebrities, dates, or what not. It will make it current, but it will date it rather quickly. Again great thread. |

Anyway, I'm always hoping for a new gi joe cartoon, and hope that it's done the right way. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

FlintW02 - I'm totally with you on that list. It's an excellent starting point on how to make a good gi joe cartoon - especially the note about the diverse cast. While renegades had its good points (and I happen to know one of the guys who developed it), it just did not seem like gi joe to me, because at the end of the day, it wasn't about a group of soldiers who were the best at what they do, but instead an A-team retread about a small group who happened to be framed and go on the run. I often wonder if the second season would have changed anything...
Anyway, I'm always hoping for a new gi joe cartoon, and hope that it's done the right way. Anybody else have any thoughts on this? I also agree with you about Renegades. It was a good cartoon and I enjoyed watching it. But, it was not classic G.I. Joe it was more like G.I. Joe meets the A-Team as you stated. At times I found myself humming the A-Team theme song when I watched it. :P The other thing Hasbro seems to be forgetting is if you have a very diverse group of Joes and Cobra; and Joe and Cobra vehicles/playsets in the cartoon, it becomes easier to sell more toys. As kids we all wanted to reenact the cartoons with our toys. And kids still do that today. I am a firm believer that is why the 1987 Psyche-Out was such a dud( I could still find him hanging on the pegs in stores in 1991! ). If he would have been in the 1987 movie, I guarantee he would have sold better, even though he was a rather boring figure. God, I would love to work at Hasbro and help to give them ideas. Some things just seem so obvious, and I don't understand why they don't do it. |

Now, the easy way to deal with this many characters is to make them a menagerie of different one-dimensional personalities. You know – this one is a by-the-book soldier; this one is a Zen master type who speaks only in platitudes; this one is a slob that loves to fart! GI Joe never did this with any of their characters (except for Bazooka, who may have been functionally retarded, which once again proves how integrated their unit was…).
That was pretty funny. |
