As much as I hate to admit it, our versions of G.I. Joe and Transformers simply do not appeal to today's kids. I have seen this time and time again, not with kids in some toy aisle, but with kids in my family, I have a very large family, lots of nephews and nieces.
case #1: I have a brother that is 18 years younger than me. When he was little, I tried to share my favorite shows with him, not to influence him necessarily, just to share with him what I think are some great shows. I put him in front of the t.v. and put on Robotech, ten minutes later he's playing with legos. I try G.I. Joe, nothing, Transformers nothing. I gave up, he had Zoids, Code Lyoko and a few others, he was happy. Now, years later, my brother is totally stoked about RoC! he calls me up and asks me if I have seen the trailer, he goes on and on about how cool it is, he can't wait to see it, etc. I come over and put on G.I. Joe (Sunbow), maybe he will like it now. "That's o.k. but I don't like the designs, that's totally different, RoC is cooler" Case #2: My nephews loved both Transformers movies, they love Transformers animated, they buy the toys, the whole deal. I was baby sitting them one night, and decided to put on some G1 Sunbow episodes. They were just not into it, they were like "Why does Ironhide look like that? Megatron looks lame", heads were smacked, but they were passionate about it, they were almost offended, they sounded like little tankers complaining about the new designs, LOL! Apparently, the new designs of the Transformers and G.I. Joe characters have struck a nerve with today's kids, who would have thought that those Hasbro design guys actually knew what they were doing! before you yell blasphemy, think about this; Their version of Transformers and G.I Joe(today's kids) are every bit as legitimate as ours. Just because ours came first doesn't make it more important or relevant, just as the 12 inch G.I. Joe of the 50's have no relevance to us. For today's kids, RoC is G.I.Joe, Animated and ROTF is Transformers, our versions are the offenders, ghosts from the past. Now, my nephews understand that any insults to the old school stuff will result in an Indian burn and hopefully, some of today's kids will eventually discover the joys of the 80's versions, I know some of you guys have kids that are into the old designs, but I'm not betting on it.

Ah man...kids today...
My younger cousins (4 and 6) are totally enthralled by RoC, unfortunately. However, Matthew (the younger one) actually showed interest in the original comics I had laying around my room. He made me show him which figures were in the comic from the display case, and he wanted to know who they were, what they did and such... On the other hand, Billy (the older one) is just about tearing the house apart in a RoC Snake Eyes costume... I see it being pretty split. I still like ARAH better, I guess we're just old fashion now...

I hear you. Though I have to admit, Transformers Animated kinda grew on me. The movie versions, the semi-naked robots with some of their parts showing through their armor, just don't appeal to me.
Going into GI Joe, I'm willing to give RoC a chance, though the almost uniform look and accelerator suits already score demerits with me. I like my Joes to look distinct from each other, in line with their MOS's and personalities, much as I like my Transformers box-like with definite and smooth surfaces and angles. But I am willing to concede the latest incarnations are the Joes and the 'Formers of the next generation, not necessarily mine. |

Kids are discovering gi joe. All of my Mom's coworkers ask questions for her to ask me about what the cool joes of the moment are, where the sales are, etc.
And believe or not. I see kids looking at RoC in the store. I guess in this horrible economy it makes more sense to buy kids 4 or 5 action figures and a vehicle rather than a video game. Hasbro better follow up RoC with a cartoon property or something, because even if we don't like the movie. The kids will and thats what matters. I also want to congratulate Hasbro for knocking out whatever Japanese trend would have existed this year. I'm sick of Bakugan, Pokemon, and other stuff. Finally kids can see good and evil again. |

I hear what your saying Jinx, I agree that the 80's were a special time for toys and cartoons, probably never to be repeated again, but think about this: there are 20 year olds right now, for whom Harry Potter is a fond childhood memory. Who's to say that todays kids won't be just as nostalgic for their cartoons and toys as we are about ours, ya never know

I agree with you Cobralalalala, my nephews love the commercials for the new movie and they really like the new toys. This is there time not mine, I had that in the 80's.
Just a small note. My nephews will be there with me when I see the movie, they made me promise to take them. They are very excited over the movie. I guess my ARAH days have now become their ROC days.
