Sorry this is gonna be kinda long, all comments are welcome both supportive and non supportive. Here it goes....
Almost a year ago I was laid off from my job of 5 yrs. I was working for Hyundai Motor America, the Headquarters/corporate office whatever you wanna call it. The only reason I say that is because whenever I would tell people I work(ed) for Hyundai they just assumed it was a dealership and I was a car salesman. Anyway I was in the parts division working as an analyst. The good things about it were definitely the perks. We had employee leases, in which we got a new car every 1 year or 15k miles whichever came first, but because of my commute I was putting up 15k miles every 3-4 months. So I was always in a new car, our insurance, registration and any maintenance was all paid for by Hyundai. Our benefits we're all also covered by the company 100% Then my girl got a job offer in Texas which is where we wanted to be anyway. She went out there and I stayed behind to save up some more money (she was staying with her mom out there) well shortly after the company she just started with went under. She was smart about it though and took a leave of absence (instead of quitting) from her then current job so she was actually able to come back to it and still keep her same pay. Well while all this was happening, I winded up getting laid off and at first I wasn't sure how I felt about it. At first I felt fine it was like a mini vacation, but then the reality of having to turn my car back in and buy one that I was gonna be stuck with set in and I was hating life. Still on the surface I was trying to be optimistic, but that "mini vacation" turned into months and started putting quite a strain on us financially. Then a couple months ago I had two options...I could go to work for Toyota (as a temp that was the catch) which paid considerably well and just shy of what I was making when I left Hyundai. The problem with that though was it was only for 3 months...maybe longer if need be but no guarantees past three months. The other problem with it was that as a temp I don't get any of the perks of being in the automotive industry. No benefits (I have 2 kids) no employee leases...nothing. Just a 3 month assignment. My other option was Ralphs...which paid considerably less to start, but at least I could get benefits after my 90 days and I wasn't a temp. I figured even though the pay was less it was the smarter choice because I wouldn't be in this situation again after 3 months. Right? Wrong...I was suspended from there last week not because of anything bad, but because it came to their attention that I live 27-28 miles from the store and the union rules are that you have to live within 25 NO EXCEPTIONS! So the store director had to suspend me and couldn't put me on the schedule until they could figure out if they could get me in another store. So far that hasn't happened. Lastly, right before this all went down I had been submitting my resume out still to try and get back in the same field. Finally I had received a call and an email from a company that really wanted to meet with me. They were a parts supplier to Toyota...and the job description had quite a few similiarities to what I did at Hyundai. I was soooo happy I went on an interview and it went very well. Two weeks passed and they said I was still a top candidate and called me in for a 2nd interview...I couldn't quite tell how that one went, but I could tell it wasn't as good as the first one.The HR lady said it was down to me and one other guy. The pay was decent...the commute was practically nothing, everything about it seemed perfect and the HR lady said she really wanted me in there as I left after my 2nd interview. I kept thinking how wonderful this would be considering the bind I'm in with Ralphs. Well today I got a letter in the mail from the company. I excitedly ripped it open hoping it was an offer letter. It wasn't! They decided to go with the other guy! I don't know what I'm gonna do now!

It's simple...you got to keep searching. I have a BA and if I had too I would work at Taco Bell.

my brother, I am very sorry I know this really sucks, i've been through it...fairly recent in fact. but trust me, just hang on and keep putting yourself out there, something good will come along.
every time i've had something like this happen, i've been pissed, hurt, and all that goes with it, but afterward.... looking back on all of those 'opportunities', i always seem to understand why it wasn't such a perfect fit for me...I would have never been happy or satisfied with that. so to keep it light, hold your head up brother, you're a good man! keep your eyes and mind open and you'll see your way through it!

Hey man, Sorry to hear this. Hopefully something will turn up for you soon.
It seems like a lot of us are in the same boat, no job, and very few prospects. Keep in mind Toyota is opening up a new plant in North East MS. Just to let you know...

Anybody you know live close enough to Ralph's to use their address? Or is it possible to file a grievance with the Union (I haven't worked Union in 20yrs, so I don't know their deal) Also, contact the HR person that interviewed you, thank her for the time and opportunity to interview and let her know to keep you in mind for future openings, don't fall off their radar.

there's nothing worse than not getting that job you want, especially if you work in such a narrow field that the opportunities are limited to begin with.
it also couldn't hurt to inquire with a labor attorney about the suspension. you passed on another job to take it under the guise you qualified for it, so there may be some recourse. I don't know, but it wouldn't hurt. |

Hey man all I can say is keep searching. The last almost 2 years has been very difficult for a lot of people. Just keep your hopes up
and try not to get discouraged. My brother is going through the same situation as you. Just gotta keep trying |
