This could certainly be the case. I think it also might be the case of a figure who's value is on the rise. I did some research, and the selling price for this figure is all over the map. While I saw plenty of lower priced sales, I also saw that he sold for $59,$67,$75,$77,& $102. All within the past 50 days. Someone even paid $45 for one with the Cobra symbol completely worn off.

But these are vintage Joes. How likely is the death of Joe in general likely to skyrocket the price of vintage pieces that haven't been made in decades anyway?

Wow, interesting so elaborated conspiracy theories posted here, it is not the first time G.I Joe has been DEAD and presumably for good so this kind of phenomena is something you see once from time to time but not always. Several variables converged here and all those variables converged only once and no more for a lot of time maybe:
*The figure is mint for any angle you see it. *Two or more of the bidders just were willing to get that figure at any price just because they did not have enough experience to know that the market for vintage Cobra Commander v1 will ever be there. *Two or more bidders just decided they wanted a CC now. (I waited patiently for a mint and complete Duke V1 for months after I got it for $28 shipping included while others have paid $50-60 for the same figure so not everyone is patient enough to wait so money buys the time they are not willing to spend). * A bidding war started from the beginning instead waiting a last second snatching. Here you are....tour recipe for overpriced things on eBay. |

Fair question. Maybe with less new stuff to spend money on collectors will focus more on filling the vintage gaps in their collection?

That's basically what I'm doing except with the vehicles... I don't collect the O-rings.

I think that newer collectors are getting into Joe now that it is slowly dying and they don't know the value of a Joe, so they bid more for something on ebay. Or maybe folks just don't like getting outbid. I'll show you!!! *spends $100+*

Ok, on the $190 one. The high bidder requested to cancel immediately after the auction end. He said he swore he entered a $22 bid but it ended up being $220. I wish he would have noticed that before the auction end. I have multiples of these in the same condition that I will list over time. Really sucks because I have like a 10% success rate on selling to the next highest bidder. Same thing happened with my mail-in Vamp. I had to relist because the high bidder from Hungary didn’t want to pay for Customs fees and Priority shipping. He could have contacted me before auction end but he didn’t. Happens all the time but the good on eBay far outweighs the bad when you sell a lot. Every seller who auctions figures on the bay will get nonpaying bidders for a multitude of reasons. I have 19 years of blocking bidders for such reasons and the list is very long.
To the guy suggesting shill bidding. I’ll just leave it at no comment to you except you might want to watch who you accuse of such things. Some of us have been around a very long time and take great offense to such things. My reputation is worth far more than $190. Last edited by kiddreams; 07-18-2018 at 09:55 PM.. |

Relax. It wasn't an accusation, it was an assumption based on information at the time.
If you have a problem, take it to PMs or contact the Admin. That being said, it sucks he backed out. It seems weird he'd claim he put in the wrong amount when eBay shows you what you bid and it's hard to believe he never checked back on his bid. It also sucks that the second highest bidder bid it up, probably on purpose, just to see how high it would go, with no intention of paying. If he refused your second chance offer, eBay should be notified because that's a form of shill bidding.

There is no recourse for someone bidding then backing out. If they request to cancel the auction they won there’s nothing that can be done other than blocking them for future auctions. Just chalk it up and move on.
Like I said, I’ve done enough auctions where 2nd chance offers rarely work. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I’ve sold something on a second chance offer. You have to consider that someone who was bidding on the auction may have found another. |
